It's taken quite a while, but the first batch of data (surnames A-D, over 4,500 names) from the transcribing of the Roll of Honour for Glasgow is finally online.

I've gone into a little more detail on the SMRG blog:

http://scottishmilitary.blogspot.com/2010/12/smrg-advent-calendar-day-23.html

I'd be grateful if people could spread the word about this - this is a biggie and I'd like as many people to get the use of this transcription as possible.

Hopefully the next batches of surnames won't take quite as long.

I said it in my blog post, but Kevin O'Neill was heavily involved in this project, and it saddens me that he wasn't able to see the completion of his work. This work is respectfully dedicated to his memory.

Excellent news.

I must have been feeling the vibes yesterday. I was checking out the SMRG website last night and was wondering when the Glasgow RoH would be made available. Weird.

Just a quick query though. Are the addresses given those of the casualty at time of enlistment or death?

Cheers,
Derek.

derek,

I'm afraid I can;t answer re the address - I assume it is the address provided by the next of kin when the Roll was compiled.

We had a slight technical hitch with the roll today - some names were not in sequence - all fixed now though!

Could someone perhaps put a post on the Great War Forum regarding this upload?

Many thanks.

Once again David another excellent addition to the site. I have an original copy of the book and have used it for my Bridgeton , Dalmarnock and Parkhead Rolls of Honour. I can fill in most of the missing district names for you plus the duplicate streets and their name changes which took place circa 1926 if you can tell me how to access it. Those nine years working in the Post Office have come to some use after all.

Yours Aye!

The addresses given are the ones given by relatives at the time the RoH was being compiled in local libraries by relatives where they simply put their loved ones names to the lists. Over the years I have noticed some duplicate names due to possibly the serviceman's widow filling in her address and then the serviceman's family filling in their address. Around 1926 there was a change of street names in Glasgow due to the fact that there were to many 'Main Street's' and 'King Streest' etc., A prime example of this was the change of Kaiser Street in Dennistoun to Marne Street plus Winston Street - originally named after Sir Winston Churchill when he married Lord Newlands's neice Clementine Ogilvie - but changed by a Red Clydesider Glasgow Corporation to Whitby Street in memory of the Zeppelin attacks on the Yorkshire town of the same name. Other notable name changes was the extension of the Gallowgate to replace Great Eastern Road which also took in the start of Tollcross Road in Parkhead. If anyone has any queries re street changes in Glasgow then feel free to contact me.

Thanks for that.

I wanted to see if my distant relation, a submitted "non-comm" was listed, he's not but a namesake is.
