Allan Glen’s School
Allan Glen's Will stated that his Trustees were to invest his estate to build and endow a school, the purpose of which was "to give a good practical education and preparation for trades or businesses, to between forty to fifty boys, the sons of tradesmen or persons in the industrial classes of society". This was called Allan Glen's School and it opened in 1853. http://www.allanglens.com/index.htm
The Allan Glen Book of Remembrance 1939 – 1945, dedicated by the Reverend W. Roy Sanderson in the Barony of Glasgow, 27 April 1949. The book commemorates former pupils and staff members of Allan Glen’s School who lost their lives in the service of their country.
The original is on display in the Barony Hall, Rottenrow East, University of Strathclyde.
A copy of the book is held in Special Collections, Strathclyde University Archives.
The following extracts and photographs are reproduced by permission of Strathclyde University Archives.

John - is there a WW1 Memorial in Allan Glen's?
There's a reference to it here: http://www.allanglens.com/newsletters/mar08.pdf
I've just discovered one of my ancestors John Mack Guthrie, M.C., was educated there before going on to Glasgow Uni.
John Guthrie was killed in action at Chambere near Rheims, 28th July 1918.

Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Company Serjeant Major
Regiment/Service: King's Own Scottish Borderers
Unit Text: 1st Bn.
Age: 35
Date of Death: 17/03/1918
Service No: 6895
Awards: V C, D C M
Additional information: Croix de Guerre (France). Son of Walter Skinner; husband of Annie E. Y. Skinner, of 173, St. Andrew's Rd., Pollockshields, Glasgow. Native of Glasgow.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: XIII. H. 15.
Cemetery: VLAMERTINGHE NEW MILITARY CEMETERY, BELGIUM.
Citation: An extract from the Second Supplement to the London Gazette dated 14th Sept., 1917, recording the award of V.C., reads- "For most conspicuous bravery and good leading. Whilst his company was attacking, machine gun fire opened on the left flank, delaying the advance. Although C.S.M. Skinner was wounded in the head, he collected six men, and with great courage and determination worked round the left flank of three blockhouses from which the machine gun fire was coming, and succeeded in bombing and taking the first blockhouse single-handed; then, leading his six men towards the other two blockhouses, he skilfully cleared them, taking sixty prisoners, three machine guns, and two trench mortars. The dash and gallantry displayed by this warrant officer enabled the objective to be reached and consolidated."
Extract from http://www.marple-uk.com/ianrice/ypres3.htm
As a local hero Jock was returned home and assigned to a training battalion. Not surprisingly this type of posting did not suit him and, against orders and despite being intercepted en route and sent back to Edinburgh, he made his way back to his battalion at the front.
A few weeks after his surprise return, on 17th March 1918, on the Bellevue Spur near Vlamertinge, Jock crawled out into no-man's-land to recover the bodies of dead comrades despite standing orders prohibiting this type of action. He continued to return to no-man's-land to bring back wounded soldiers but was killed along with accompanying stretcher-bearers.
Jock's body was carried the seventeen miles from the front line to this cemetery where it was borne to its final resting-place. At his funeral, there were nine other holders of the V.C. from the 29th Division in attendance, six of them acting as pallbearers.
John

Thanks very much for adding the Roll of Honour John.
One of 'mine' is listed, that's why I was particularly interested: Guthrie, Capt. John (Mack): Black Watch
