From what I can see this chap is the only officer listed

Grave/Memorial Reference: E. 13.
Cemetery: DICKEBUSCH NEW MILITARY CEMETERY
The last time I saw a church memorial with only one officer amongst so many names it was United Free Church memorial. The rest of the officers and several NCOs were on the Church of Scotland memorial.
Having checked the Langhom memorial names on the main memorial though I see that there are only three officers listed out of 131 names so I'm sure it will be the CoS memorial. The UKNIWM doesn't give any more information about its origin but it does say the names are on a brass plaque with a wooden frame. It still looks like it's all wood to me.

I can't see any discernible pattern in the order the names are listed.

I think they've used the same order as the community war memorial. That is KOSBs aphabetically then other units alphabetically. I checked one of the first names in CWGC and he was KOSB

I photographed all the memorials in Langholm church and checked them against UKNIWM and this can only be the CoS memorial. I wish I had paid more attention in the few minutes I had to take the photos in a dark entrance. From the photos I have, it does seem like some sort of plate (not wood) but the colour is almost identical. My guess from the photos is that it is copper with some sort of matt finish. Here is an alternative pic which may help.

There are only two J B Ewarts listed on CWGC for the Great War. One of them has a Hawick connection which should interest you Derek.
