The memorial to the men of Hopeman is the Hopeman Memorial Hall (now used as a creche). There is an engraving above the entrance and a more recent (well it looks more recent to me) plaque on the wall.

You often find on Highland WMs that one surname is more common than others. I see in Hopeman it is Main with McKenzie and McPherson also dominating.
I notice also that they differentiated between the two John Mains by adding their middle initial but didn't for all the other duplicated names.

I have a copy of the Morayshire Roll of Honour if anyone wants one of the Great War names looked up.

Between Findhorn and Lossiemouth, including Burghead, Cummingston and Hopeman, I counted 31 men from the (presumably) extended Main family.

The name is still common up that neck of the woods.

If asked, I will happily post on the forum (or email individuals) that part of the Memorial that contains the details of a specific individual. Furthermore, I would also be prepared to email higher resolution photographs of this War Memorial.

Nice to see this - thanks for posting it up. Spent many a fantastic holiday up in Hopeman with my friend when I was younger - magical place. Always wondered where the war memorial was - now I know Smile

Seem to remember making the acquaintance of some rather charming young ladies up there with the family names of Main and McPherson - so its still very much in use Laughing

Barrie,

I used to live half way up Farquhar Street (the same street as the Memorial Hall) and I am embarrassed to admit that I didn't know where the Memorial was!
