I'm new to this site and am not sure if anyone maybe able to help with this mystery. I have looked at The National Archives online without much success or knowledge in what to look for.
I have an ancestor William Hamilton born Gibraltar about 1839-1845. He married in Glasgow 1864 and on the marriage certificate states father PRIVATE WILLIAM HAMILTON DECEASED 44TH REGIMENT OF FOOT and mother Margaret Elliot.
Margaret remarried to Thomas Hunt in 1850 Cavan Ireland so I think William senior had passed away by then.
I live in Australia and am doing most of my research on line.
Any help or suggections would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for taking the time to read my post |

Have you tried 'Googling'?
For example: http://44th.webs.com/
Might be worthwhile leaving a message or asking a question on the above site if it's information on the regiment you're looking for.
Wikipedia lists all the conflicts the '44th' were engaged at, so perhaps William Snr. died/was killed in action overseas somewhere? Alternatively, if he died at home (Scotland?), his Death Certificate could possibly be available to view/download from 'Scotland's People', providing that the date was after 1855, the year Statutory Registration in Scotland began.

If you scroll down to the foot of the 'Wiki' page, there's an External Link Personnel Lists - you might find something there.
