DETAILS : Lost without trace (subsequently found to have crashed in Denmark), all members of the crew are remembered on the Runnymede Memorial. Both Sgts Martin and Vandy came from military backgrounds; the former was the son of Lt Col Arthur William Martin, and Sgt Vandy's father was Lt Cdr Henry Vandy OBE, RNVR.

For nearly seven decades, Sgt Barrie and his seven comrades have lain in unmarked graves in a Danish cemetery as none of them were identifiable due to the impact of the crash.

Now dedicated Danish historian Anders Straarup has solved the mystery and identified all eight airmen, bringing great comfort and relief to their families. They will travel to Bispebjerg, Denmark, for a ceremony to dedicate the new marked Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstones with the correct names on.

Retired schoolteacher Mr Straarup discovered the truth after unearthing old photos of the aircraft wreckage and a German report describing the plane involved. Remarkably, he also traced eye-witnesses to the crash after nearly seven decades by placing an appeal for help in a local newspaper.

The new information helped him whittle the potential aircraft down to Halifax bomber DT628. On the night of April 20, 1943, Halifax DT628 of 51 Squadron, Lincs, was part of a formation of 339 bombers on a raid on German munitions factories in Poland. While over the Danish coast the aircraft was struck by German flak. Realising they were going down, the crew dumped the 1,000lbs bomb in a field before crashing at Halskov. The impact caused the remaining incendiary bombs and fuel to blow the Halifax apart.

One of the reasons why it has taken so long to learn the truth is because there are seven graves for the eight men that were on board. The Germans who buried their remains assumed there were seven of them because that was the usual number of a bomber crew. But the aircraft in question was carrying novice pilot Deryk Martin on his maiden flight so he could gain operational experience.
Also, the War Office wrongly informed the families the plane had crashed at sea after an unidentified airman was washed ashore at Holland.

CUPAR ROYAL SCOT PRIVATE KILLED
Mrs Buglass, Balmeadowside Farm, Cupar, has received intimation that her second son, Private George Buglass, Royal Scots, has been killed in action.

Private Buglass was first reported missing in Hong Kong in January 1942.

He was a dairyman in Dalkeith before joining the Army eight years ago at the age of 20. After a year's home service he was a year in India and then went to Hong Kong.

Private Buglass’ elder brother, Simpson, was also with the Royal Scots in Hong Kong, but was allowed home on compassionate leave on the illness and death of their father, Mr Peter Buglass, three years ago, and is still in this country. A younger brother is serving in North Africa.

CUPAR ARTILLERYMAN KILLED
Mr and Mrs Alexander Brown, Cupar Mills, Cupar, have received intimation that their only son, Driver William Brown, has been killed in action in Italy. Driver Brown who was in the Scottish Horse attached to the Royal Artillery, was 27 years of age and had been in the Army for nearly four years.

He was married about a year ago, and his wife resides, in Warsop, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

Before joining up he was employed by Messrs William Oliphant & Son, contractors, Cupar. A sister is serving in the A.T.S.

This was one of the memorials which was awarded a renovation grant on 20th February through the Scottish Government's Centenary Memorials Restoration Fund:

This memorial faces a number of issues. Exposure to weather and pollution has resulted in a build-up of dirt and biological growth on the stone as well as corrosion of the bronze elements. Joints which have been pointed with cement mortar in the past. These joints are now cracking or are missing which mean that water is getting into the memorial. In addition, past unsightly repair work to the stone boundary wall is starting to fail.

The grant funding will support the cleaning and repair work to the stone and the bronze elements of the memorial. In addition, existing cement joints will be removed and repointed with a lime mortar and sensitive repair work will be undertaken at the boundary wall.
