Hi everyone

My HERD 'cousins' and I have a bit of a dilema. In the family tree there's a David Herd, from Methil, who was a Sapper in the Royal Engineers and died in Fort Pitt Military Hospital on 21 Nov 1915 of ANTHRAX! We're exercising our rights under the Freedom of Information Act to find out how this could have happened, but that's another story.

One 'cousin' (ex-Royal Navy Confused) had thought this David was the Corporal David Herd named on the WWI War Memorial in Methil, however ... there's nae trace in the CWGC website for the Corporal although the Sapper is there.

Can anybody help?

Cheers

Chiad Fhear

There are no Cpl's named David Herd on CWGC. It is not unusual for the wrong rank to appear on a war memorial.

Hi John

Thanks for that. I also know about L/CPL George Lamb Herd born Wemyss and killed 29/7/18. My late mother was a 1st cousin once removed of his father.

I think the ex-RN HERD 'cousin' has got his wires crossed somewhere and I need to speak with him again

Regards

John

I've found Gunner Henry on the CWGC site.

Question I have a Henry Herd born at Strathkinness which was in the Parish of St Andrews and St Leonards, Fife.

Do you know anything more about this man, e.g. was he born 6 Oct 1879; married at Braehead, Methil to Margaret Warrender in 1902; father of five bairns - 3 lassies and two boys? I've got a strong feeling itcould be him Smile

Thanks Jim

But would it be unusual to have the wrong Regiment as well? Confused

Hi again John

I've been searching through my Herd records and have found William: 202083 Corporal, 4th/5th Bn., Black Watch (Royal Highlanders): I have him as quoted on the memorial - died 21 Mar 1918

I'll update the ex-RN 'cousin' Laughing

Regards

Did you know there is a Private R. Herd of the Black Watch on the Strathkinness War Memorial

He may be related?

Cheers

It can occur where men were in more than one regiment, or were attached to another unit. Likewise, someone can be an acting Corporal, unpaid, and be listed as Corporal which is inaccurate. Families and newspapers tended to inflate ranks, at times.

A good example would be a regular who was a sergeant during the African War who was a Private soldier during WW1, being listed on a memorial as Sgt. X

'kinnethmont'

I think in the case of David ... to have been discharged with rheumatism on 23 October 1914 from the Gordon Highlanders after only 18 days then enlisting in the Royal Engineers and succumbing to Anthrax on 21 Nov 1915, service with any other regiment would seem most unlikely.

That said, I think I have traced the Corporal - William - just a mix-up of names Embarassed

Cheers

Chiad

Now that you mention the Gordon's service I agree in this case.
My comment was of a general nature based on my findings over many years tracking casualties on memorials.

Glad you got the Cpl. sorted out.

I have added a photograph to the first post of Sapper David Herd's grave. Chiad forewarded on an image which had been passed to him by someone in Kent.

Thanks

I have just come across this and think that we might be related.I have tried to pm you but have been prevented - not sure why.

My mother's family were Herds from Denbeath, Buckhaven ec. My mother had Lamb as a middle name along with Ross.
