Stonelaw Parish Church, 2 Dryburgh Avenue, Rutherglen G73 3EG

OS Grid Ref: NS 617611

In April, 1910, the contract for the building was placed with Messrs. Train & Taylor to plans submitted by Messrs. J. B. Wilson & Son, architects. The memorial stone was laid on 30th March, 1912 and on Tuesday, 3rd September, 1912 the church was opened and dedicated by the Right Rev Thomas Whitelaw, moderator of the U.F. Assembly. www.stonelawchurch.org

In February, 1919, Mr John Train gifted the Memorial Stained Glass Window in the eastern gable of the church in Memory of the Fallen in the 1914-18 War.
The Theme of the Memorial Window
The two centre lights form the main subject. The Christian soldier is shown as standing on the pinnacle of the mountains and is illustrative of the text “Well done, good and faithful servant”. He has fought the good fight and has kept the faith, and now bears aloft the standard of his faith, while an angel consecrates the principles involved in the flag and in the warriors completed task.
The left hand light illustrates Truth shedding the rays of enlightenment from her lamp upon this darkened and sinful world, as symbolised by the crouching figure which bears on its back a burden.
The right hand light depicts the benign influence of Charity, rescuing and succouring the soul enmeshed in the toils of sin and worldliness, as well as protecting the young from danger and trial.
The tracery embraces the celestial sphere. Christ enthroned in Glory is in the act of blessing the warrior and is surrounded by the adoring throng of Angels.
