It seems North Lanarkshire council are well underway in repairing and cleaning all the war memorials in its care.
They are also adding casualties from conflicts since WW2 to the relevant memorials in time.

A new initiative designed to upgrade,
restore and preserve North Lanarkshire’s
war memorials is underway – and the
New Stevenston memorial was one of
the first to benefit.
It needed quite a bit of work – the
soldier’s rifle and one of his feet were
missing; the plaque and inscription
were becoming difficult to read and
overall the structure needed repointing
and cleaning.
Councillor Helen McKenna, Convener
of Environmental Services, is delighted
with the result – and says the local
community is, too.
“Some of the ladies from the New
Stevenston Methodist Church, who
attended the memorial service, told me
how pleased they were with the work,”
she said. “They asked me to share their
thanks with everyone involved.
“I know that feeling is shared by many.
It’s great to see the difference these
works have made.”
While the project continues across
North Lanarkshire, the council is also
looking at ways to add the names of
those who have given their lives since
World War 2.
The creation of the Elizabeth Cross, an
award presented to families of those
who have died on operations or as a
result of terrorism since World War 2
means there is an official register of names.
A list of names will be requested from
the Ministry of Defence each year, and
with the permission of the families
those names will be added to the
most appropriate war memorial.

Work on the restoration of North
Lanarkshire’s war memorials continues, and
another local project comes to a close.
The plaque and inscription on Airdrie
War Memorial have been cleaned and
restored, and the stonework brought back
to original condition. The war memorials
project aims to protect every such
monument in North Lanarkshire, and to
examine opportunities for adding names
of those awarded the Elizabeth Cross,
presented to the families of those killed on
operations or as a result of terrorism since
World War Two. |
