Not listed on UKNIWM

Located in Colinton Parish Church at OS Map Ref NT 217 689

I have not seen a women's Roll of Honour before and have a feeling that it may be unique.

If blue means the same as on the men's Roll of Honour then Gertrude Row Fogo died during the war. She is not listed on CWGC or SNWM and I have not found any info on her.

She is buried in the churchyard at Colinton.

Also listed on the Colinton Parish War Memorial (alphabetically listed under Fogo)

She is to be found on the SNWM website, indexed as Row-Fogo.

As a civilian worker she does not qualify for commemoration by CWGC.

Not always true, 71 members of the VAD did qualify and are listed by CWGC. I was just pointing out that she is not one of those listed.

I agree. As a Recognised Civilian Organisation VAD members can qualify in certain circumstances, but usually they cannot be commemorated by CWGC.

My comment ralated to this case, being aware of the details on her death certificate. At the time I took it you were querying why she was not on CWGC.

How times change. There are three Gertrudes listed on this Roll.

Thanks

Row-Fogo, Gertrude. Daughter of David Row-Fogo, Row, Perthshire and sister of Mr J Row-Fogo, C.A., 13 George Street, Edinburgh. Gertrude was a Red Cross Nurse serving in the 8th Midlothian Voluntary Aid Detachment who, from 1915, served at Cramond House Red Cross Hospital, Kingsknowe Red Cross Hospital, then Bangour War Hospital. She retired from Bangour in October 1916 due to illness. According to the death notice in The Scotsman [10/01/1917] she “died, on 08/01/1917, of illness contracted on duty.”

I haven’t had a chance to look at her death certificate yet.
