PERTHSHIRE ADVERTISER: 15.09.1920
COUPAR ANGUS SCHOOL WAR MEMORIAL
Unveiled And Dedicated By Mr Norie-Miller

The old and young of Coupar Angus turned out on Saturday in large numbers to pay fitting honour to the memory of the 68 former pupils of the school who had made the great sacrifice during the recent war. The afternoon was stormy. Mr F. Norie-Miller, J.P., F.E.I.S., chairman of the Perthshire Education Authority, unveiled and dedicated the memorial Gateway erected in front of the school. A platform had been erected inside the girls' playground, where members of the school Authority and Town Council, and Mr Norie-Miller, Mrs Norie-Miller, the Rev. Charles Stewart, and Mr G.W.F. Strain, the headmaster, were seated. The relatives of the former pupils occupied seats immediately in front of the platform.
The memorial, as already mentioned, takes the form of a gateway, with one entrance for the girls and another for the boys. It is built of Leys quarry stone. At the top middle portion of the gateway is a panel bearing the Coupar Angus Coat of Arms. Three plates of Balmoral granite, set in the three parts of the memorial, are inscribed with the names of the fallen. On top of the centre portion a laurel wreath is set, while at the bottom, beautiful wreaths were placed by relatives of the fallen.
Inscribed round the memorial are the words:- "In Loving and Grateful Memory of the following former pupils of Coupar Angus Public School who fell in the Great War".
The ceremony commenced with the singing of "Our God our help in ages past". Then prayer was offered up by the Rev. Mr Stewart, chairman of the Education Authority, Coupar Angus branch, who afterwards introduced Mr Norie-Miller. The chairman said that this day would be memorable to them all. They were met to remember with sincere effection and to do honour to those former pupils of the school who, in the Great War, laid down their lives in the service of their King and country. Some 350 young men who had received their education at Coupar Angus School, went forth on the great adventure, and of these 68 had not returned. The memorial would serve to keep in the minds of the children who passed through the gateway, the splendid self-sacrifice and bravery of those former pupils.
Thereafter Mr G.W.F. Strain read the names of the fallen. Mr Norie-Miller, subsequently unveiled the memorial.
The Rev. A. Wylie Smith, Bendochy, having engaged in prayer, Mr Norie-Miller said he felt it a great honour and privilege to unveil the beautiful memorial, which they had set up to commemorate the supreme sacrifice made by those 68 brave former pupils of the school. The outward record of gratitude was erected so that coming generations might have in mind the names of those who saved the honour and freedom of their beloved country. He trusted they would never cease to show their gratitude, and to thank God for all those whose deeds and sacrifice were the means He in His wisdom and love had used to give us victory. Those dear boys who made the great sacrifice and had marched forth in their country's hour of need, and by their sacrifice had earned our loving gratitude. Their bones lay in foreign lands, or in the deep waters of the seas, but their Memorial was in the land of their birth, and erected by those who loved them and whom they loved. These boys knew their duty and did it well.
Mr L.R. Mills sang with feeling a sacred solo - "The Sleep, the Lads We Love" - written and composed by his brother, Mr Lester Mills. Miss Matthews made an efficient accompanist. 'The Last Post' was sounded by Mr William Davidson, Hay Street, and the company sang the 66th Paraphrase, 'How bright these glorious spirits shine".
The Rev. Charles Stewart having pronounced the Benediction, a touching and not to be forgotten ceremony terminated with the singing of the National Anthem.

Familywise it has been up and down with the 1911 census so far. However, on my first search for 'unknown' local soldiers I identified Robert Laing. He was born in Galashiels and living in Coupar Angus with his grandfather, a fruitgrower:

COUPAR ANGUS FOOTBALLER KILLED
Official information has been received by Mr and Mrs Forbes, Buttery Bank, Coupar Angus, that their fifth son, L/Cpl. Drummond Forbes, Gordon Highlanders, has been killed in action in Normandy.
L/Cpl. Forbes, who was 31, joined the Forces in 1940, prior to which he was employed as a greenkeeper at Rosemount Golf Course.
A keen footballer, he played for Alyth, Lochee Harp, and captained the Coupar Angus Juniors in their record-breaking season just before the war. He had inter-county honours.
