The collar and face made me think of the young soldier in Lochmaben. Is the same sculptor responsible for both?

I agree, it has the same 'look and feel' of Lochmaben.

Originally the Statue and name side of the plinth did indeed face the same way.
I'm wondering if a growing tree line on the slopes of the hill, therefore blocking his frontal view, was was the reason the figure ended up being turned around?

I think the wooden rifle must be a replacement. As you can see in the recent photos his weapon is sitting on his toe, probably to give it some purchase, but in the old image you can (just) see it went straight down to the base between his feet.

Here's a postcard image, not great but you can see the names and facing side of the soldier.

Many thanks to Lorna Byre who took the time to contact us about Glenfinnan's memorial, which confirms it was reinstated incorrectly after road improvements.

The base is the wrong way round as the road, much improved in the 1960s used to run below the Memorial, and now runs above the Memorial. It was moved while blasting/roadbuilding was being carried out, and replaced after works were completed. Unfortunately, someone didn't get things quite right!

Thanks again to Lorna for this information.
