Teddy,
Thanks for the info. I've attached a link to the location in case anyone is wondering where the bridge is:

Just curious, why would another memorial to the crash be needed in this area?

Thanks

Adam,
Think your answer is that the plaque is going to be placed at the spot where the accident occurred. The Cairn in 1995 was in Gretna Green which was a wee bit away from the spot.
Photos of cairn can been seen under Quintinshill Rail in Reg. Units Memorials; and you will see away from the accident spot.

I attended the unveiling of the memorial today. Dry but cold and windy - the ceremony was well attended and I must comment on the excellent piping.

In this next picture, you can see the memorial with the site of the tragedy visible over the bridge

Paul,
That explains the "Scottish War Memorials" cross lying below the plaque.

Any idea why the plaque is dated 2009?

Yes, the cross was mine.

I noticed 2009, I am just guessing but perhaps the plaque was made in 2009 and it has taken time to get the necessary permissions and work done on the bridge? Also note that the memorial was unveiled by the young widow of the man whose inscription was used on the memorial. I again guess that he was a driving force behind the memorial and his untimely death delayed its unveiling.

This is the nearest memorial to the scene of the tragedy and I note on my original post from 2010 that I described the unveiling as well attended. Well everything is relative and having seen the memorial on today's evening news with a much larger crowd. Nice to see the event and the memorial being brought to national attention.
