Two of these men are also on the Granton Parish War Memorial.

John Bell - London Scottish. The circumstances of his death on the night train from London have already been discussed on the Granton thread. Address - 3 Wardie Steps.

John Denholm Logan. Highland Light Infantry. Died 21/10/1918 aged 18. It looks as if he died during training in UK (perhaps influenza) as he has no medal card and is buried in Edinburgh Eastern Cemetery. Address:13 Lower Granton Road.

From The Scotsman, Tuesday 14th December 1920.

    WARDIE U.F. CHURCH, EDINBURGH

A memorial to perpetuate the memory of those members of the congregation who fell in the war was unveiled at the Wardie United Free Church on Sunday. The unveiling ceremony was performed by the Rev. James Baikie, F.R.A.S., who also preached the sermon. The memorial is in the form of a handsome bronze tablet with fumed oak surround, and bears the names of 15 members of the congregation who made the supreme sacrifice.

Wardie U.P. to U.F. to CofS.

I've managed to confirm all but one of the men on the memorial. The one I can't find on CWGC or SDGW is James G Macgregor, Royal Engineers.

The 1901 census has a James G MacGregor, aged 5, born in Edinburgh around 1896, son of John L MacGregor [Draper’s Assistant] and Helen MacGregor of 3 Monmouth Terrace, Goldenacre, Edinburgh. Siblings were Elizabeth and Helen L MacGregor. I believe this is the right one.

There is also a medal card for a Cpl James G McGregor [different spelling], initially Pte 3689, A&SH, then Cpl WR/176037, RE, then Cpl 251383, A&SH then Cpl 421919, RE. ETW 01/05/1915, (1) France, 1914-1915 Star, BWM & VM. However there is no mention of the man dying on the card therefore I can't be sure if this is the right man.

If anyone comes across him in their research then could you let me know.
Thanks

May have answered my own question.

There is a picture of a grave stone on the "War Graves Project" website loacted in Edinburgh Warriston Cemetery, that reads James MacGregor, Royal Engineers, died 12/03/1919 from effects of service in the Great War, aged 23, son of John MacGregor & Helen Dallas. The Scotsman death notice on 14th March 1919 says he died after 4½ years service. His address was given as 11 Darnell Road, Trinity.

The age and parents names match those of the man I found in the 1901 census and of course Warriston cemetery is close by Wardie.

I will get a copy of his death cert next time I'm in Register House to see whether or not he might be a possible non-com for CWGC.

Excellent work finding James MacGregor. It will be interesting to see if he is another non-com.

The only David Craik I can see in CWGC is a Seaforth and that doesn't seem to match the one on the memorial. Do you have any details about him?

Kind regards

Adam

Hi Adam

Yes I believe I have identified him. He was a Cadet in Edinburgh University's OTC Artillery unit from May tp September 1916. Believe it of not he died on 23/09/1916, aged 18, 94 years to the day!

He is mentioned in both the Royal High ROH and the EU ROH, although in this latter one he is squeezed into a section at the end of the casualties where additional names were added.

Borin in Edinburgh around 1898, a son of David [Hosier Shopkeeper] & Caroline Craik, of 23 Brunswick Street in 1901 but 3 Clark Road, Trinity according to a death notice in The Scotsman dated 26/09/1916. He had a sister called Caroline.

The cause of death varies. The Royal High ROH says he died during a surgical operation in Edinburgh but according to the Scotsman and EU ROH he died after an accident. Perhaps he had an accident that meant he required surgery and he died during the procedure. The death certificate at Register House might give more details.

Quite a coincidence!

I take it if he was in the OTC he doesn't qualify for a CWGC record?

Thanks
