Andrew Cunningham held major appointments in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. He was born in Dublin, not Scotland but his parents were of Scottish descent and in 1946 he took the title Viscount Cunningham of Hyndhope, of Kirkhope in the County of Selkirk.

Next to Cunningham in Trafalgar Square are Jellicoe and Beatty. Neither of them had Scottish family connections but both were in command of fleets based in Scotland during the Great War.
