I can't believe I've missed a new memorial being unveiled on my doorstep. Redbraes Park is less than ten minutes walk from my home!

Are these unveilings a great secret that can't be shared in advance?

something odd about the Crichton gardens memorial.......the article says 'A memorial plaque was unveiled and a ceremonial tree planted' but I walked every path in the gardens today (twice) and spoke to a lady who walks her dog there every day, no sign of a new tree or plaque. I will have to make further enquiries in the new year

Commando tribute on its way
Plans for new Fort William memorial at advanced stage
Published: 15/04/2010
A PROJECT to erect a new memorial at Fort William dedicated to the elite commando fighting force is at an advanced stage.
The Commando Veterans Association (CVA) wants to instal a 4ft-square granite monument in Fort William Parade. It will include an inscribed bronze plate detailing the World War II history of the commandos in Lochaber and their relationship with the people of Fort William and surrounding areas.
CVA national secretary Geoff Murray has advised Highland Council that work by craftsmen on the monument is ongoing.
Local opinion is that the most appropriate location for it is on The Parade at Fort William, close to the town war memorial in front of the Duncansburgh MacIntosh Parish Church.
The commandos, all volunteers, were put through a gruelling regime at Achnacarry, near Fort William, in the 1940s. Many who survived the war declared that it had been “almost as bad as Achnacarry".
Among the commandos’ 38 battle honours in World War II were eight Victoria Crosses, six awarded posthumously.
The world-famous Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge was unveiled on September 27, 1952, by the Queen Mother. An estimated 50,000 visitors visit the memorial each year. |

RAF Kinloss Nimrod memorial for 14 servicemen approved
A memorial in honour of the servicemen who were killed when a Nimrod from RAF Kinloss exploded in Afghanistan is to be erected in Moray.
Fourteen men died when the aircraft blew-up in mid-air in 2006.
Moray councillors have now approved a 14-sided cairn, standing 6ft high, to be located on a landscaped area close to the war memorial in Forres.
The cost of the memorial will come from donations received by families in the wake of the tragedy. |

|
|
An article in "The Courier" mentioned a campaign which has begun to remember the 5 people who died when a sea mine exploded near West Wemyss in Fife.
It occured on the 23rd of January 1941 and it is hoped it will be in place to be unveiled on the 70th anniversary of the tragedy.
Apparently there is little information on what happened, other than speaking to elderly local residents. The event was was not reported in the local press at the time (perhaps) owing to it being a british mine that had washed up on the beach.
The man organising the memorial is called John Drummond. |

That reminds me of a TV program I saw several years ago about children being killed by explosives they found on training ranges. There were several such incidents in England but I have not heard of any in Scotland but presumably there were some?
