The following paragraph is extracted from the 1955 Daniel Stewart’s College Centenary history:
In 1922, the cenotaph which stands in front of the school was raised.
It was designed by William Carruthers Laidlaw,
a Former Pupil of the school, in the form of a
simple obelisk of dressed freestone, thirty feet high,
on a pedestal which is placed on an elevated platform.
On three sides are decorative bronze panels with
elaborate symbolism recording the names of the dead.
The memorial was unveiled by John Buchan (Lord Tweedsmuir)
on the 24th of February, 1922.
In 2002, extensive repair and restoration work was
carried out on the memorial. This included the addition
of two bronze plaques commemorating the First World War dead
of the Edinburgh Institution and the
Second World War dead of Melville College.
The names of the EI/MC fallen are recorded on a
bronze plaque on permanent display in the schools library. |
