HMS Sturdy ran aground at Sandaig, Tiree, on October 30, 1940
This display is in the community museum in Scarinish, which also has a wealth of information and artefacts relating to WW1 and WW2 (when Tiree had an air station)
Five crewmen died trying to make it to shore and are buried at Soroby graveyard.
The remainder of the crew survived due to the fortunate presence on land of a senior naval officer, home on leave, who told them to stay on board and organised their rescue.
The Commander was George Cooper, who was punished for allowing his vessel to run aground but was considered such a talented young officer (at a time when the RN needed such people!) that he was quickly given even greater responsibilities, latterly as Commander of HMS Exeter

Tiree to honour the dead of HMS Sturdy

Commodore Charles Stevenson, CBE, (Naval Regional Commander, Scotland and Northern Ireland), relatives of the crew and island families who cared for the surviving seamen will be at the dedication ceremony and will hear there the Tiree pipe band play in tribute. |
