Today I visited the Scottish memorial in the city of Best in Holland.
It stands in a nice park, near the centre of the town.

Paul

That's an unusual memorial. I'm assuming it represents tartan and highland dancers?

Great photos and thanks for posting them.

Kind regards

Adam

Hi Adam,

It represents tartan indead, and the three men represent freedom by jumping through the tartan.

About 120 Scotts and a lot of civilians died during the seven day liberation of Best. Each year at Oktober 24th a memorial service is kept at this memorial. This was the day the city was liberated.

In the city of Best is a great museum about Market-Garden, this operation took place in Best. http://www.wingsofliberation.nl/index.php?lang=en If you are in Holland some time, you could take a visit there.

Regards,
Paul

That's a very unusual memorial.
Have you any idea who the creator was?

Hi Derek,

I do know, it's designed by a Dutch artist named Antoinette Briët.

The attack on Best began 22nd September by 15th Scottish Division, the Initial assault carried out by 7th Seaforth and 2nd Glasgow Highlanders. It would take a Month of severe and bloody fighting before Best was Liberated.
3rd October 152 and 153 brigades of 51st Highland Division moved to Best. My Father was involved in patrols to a Silk Factory in Best, (now a Carpet/furniture shop ), not far down the road from the monument on the other side of the road. They were stuffing silk stockings in their tunics even as they were fighting the Germans, who were no doubt doing the same. They also entered the Bata shoe factory hoping to find a nice pair of shoes. Unfortunately they could only find shoes for left feet.

That is a nice story to give the memorial something extra.
Been to Best today, visited the local zoo.
