I understand the Norfolk War Hospital was housed in an asylum, and these hospitals continued to employ their former staff, so she might well have been a civilian probationer. She could also have been a military Special Military Probationer.
I think the former is more likely as she is not listed on the Scottish Military Nurses Memorial. It is unlikely any records exist to confirm her service either way.

If someone obtains the Death Certificate it may well assist.

Born 1896 at Ullioch Farm, Balmaghie. Son of James and Andrina (Hogg) Carson. Working on his father's farm at Barnbackle, Lochrutton he enlisted in June 1916 and was killed at Ypres.
Killed in action 13 August 1917 and listed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium and on the Lochrutton War Memorial, Kirkcudbrightshire.


CPL. N. P. C. CARTER, AYRSHIRE YEO.

Nayhum Parker Clark Carter, Private (270187) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots. Formerly Private (2049) 2/1st Ayrshire Yeomanry. Age 27.
Born 1890 at Threave Mains, Balmaghie. Son of Andrew and Helen (Walbran) Carter. Husband of Jane Agnes (Kirkpatrick) Carter of Copland St. Dalbeattie who he married in 1915 at Ayr. Enlisted November 1914 and served in the Ayrshire Yeomanry for 3 years before transferring to the Royal Scots.
Missing in action 27 March 1918 and listed on the Pozieres Memorial, France. Also listed on the Rolls of Honour of Balmaghie Church and Rhonehouse School.


PTE. J. CONNELLY, R. W. SURREYS.

Joseph Connelly, Private (G/72559) 2/4th Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) Age 18.
Born 1900 at Bridge of Dee, Balmaghie. Son of William and Jean (Austin) Connelly. Enlisted March 1918 in the 2/4th Royal Berkshire Regiment. Transferred to 2/1st Hertfordshire Yeomanry and then to 2/4th Surreys. Wounded at Ypres and died in the 2nd Canadian CCS.
Died of wounds 13 September 1918 and buried in Esquelbecq Military Cemetery, France where his headstone is inscribed
"Of Bridge of Dee Castle Douglas. Wee Joe."
Also listed on the Rolls of Honour of Balmaghie Church and Rhonehouse School.

An update (August 2015) with many thanks to Judy of the Aston History Group.
“Wee Joe” was a jockey living and working in the twin villages of Aston Tirrold and Aston Upthorpe near Didcot in Berkshire (now Oxfordshire) when he enlisted in March 1918 as Private (41912) in the 2/4th Royal Berkshire Regiment. He was transferred to 2/1st Hertfordshire Yeomanry and then to 2/4th Surreys. Wounded at Ypres, he died in 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station and was buried near Popperhinge. He is listed on the Aston War Memorial, the Muster Roll in St. Michael's Church in Aston Tirrold and on a plaque in the United Reformed Church.

Missing in action 25 January 1915 and listed on the Le Touret Memorial, France. Also listed on the Roll of Honour of Balmaghie Church.

John was employed as a sawmiller on the Castlemilk Estate, Lockerbie when he enlisted in the ASC in November 1916. He was posted to the KRRC in France in the summer of 1917.
Born 1879 at Conchieton Farm, Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Agnes (Burgoyne) Irving of Laurieston, Mossdale, Balmaghie.
Husband of Helen (Hutton) Irving of Turnmuir, Lockerbie who he married in 1902 in Little Drumrash, Parton, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died of wounds 9 August 1918 and buried in Pernes British Cemetery, France.
Alson named on the Lockerbie Great War Memorial.

Hugh Mackenzie, Private (23244) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 33.
Born 1882 at Croy, Inverness-shire. Son of Alexander and Catherine (Fraser) Mackenzie of Finniness Farm, Balmaghie. Enlisted March 1916 in the KOSB. At the time of his death his Machine Gun Section was attached to the 8th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Hit by shell fire most of the section were wounded but Hugh was killed. Missing in action 27 September 1916 and listed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. Also listed on the Roll of Honour of Balmaghie Church.


PTE. W. McCORMICK, MGC.

William McCormick, Private (122209) 46th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps. Formerly Private (203660) Highland Light Infantry. Age 20.
Born 1898 at Bridge of Dee, Balmaghie. Son of William and Margaret Jane (Kirk) McCormick. William enlisted May 1917 in 5th (Reserve) HLI. He transferred to MGC before going to France.
Died of wounds 17 July 1918 and buried in Pernes British Cemetery, France. Also listed on the Rolls of Honour of Balmaghie Church and Rhonehouse School; and on the Gatehouse-of-Fleet War Memorial


PTE. J. M'IVOR, HAMPSHIRE RGT.

Born 1876 at Leeds,Yorkshire. Son of Peter and Margaret (Goldie) McIver. Husband of Ada (Cartlidge) McIver of Bridge of Dee, Balmaghie. who he married in 1902 at Castle Douglas, Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire. A Butler at Dildawn House, Kelton he enlisted in January 1917 in Paris. He served with the Military Forwarding Party from Southampton and Le Havre but was discharged in November 1917 due to heart disease.
Died 3 October 1918 at home in Bridge of Dee from kidney and heart disease and is buried in Balmaghie Parish Churchyard.

James Curran McLuskie, Gunner (69267) 121st Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Age 24.
Born 1892 at Balmaghie. Son of John and Agnes (Henry) McLuskie of Loop Cottage, Bridge of Dee, Balmaghie. James was working at the Oakbank Oil Company in Mid Calder when enlisted.
Killed in action 28 December 1916 and buried in Quarry Cemetery, Montauban, Somme, France. Also listed on the Rolls Of Honour of Balmaghie Church and Rhonehouse School; and on the Kirknewton & East Calder Parish War Memorial in West Lothian.


PTE. W. M'MASTER, KINGS LIVERPL.

William McMaster, Private (355922) Depot, The King's (Liverpool Regiment) Age 24.
Born 1894 at Creebridge, Minnigaff, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Archibald and Phyllis (Didcott) McMaster of The Gardens, Laurieston Hall, Balmaghie.
(Archie and Phyllis married in Brentford, Middlesex in 1892. In 1901 they and William were in Blackburn, Lancashire)
An Electrician, William was working in Liverpool on the refitting of Cunard Liners for naval work when he enlisted in November 1914 in the 1/10th (Scottish) Battalion of The King's. He served at the Somme, Ypres, Cambrai, Guenchy and Festubert. Althouh wounded twice he survived only to die immediately after demobilisation.
Died 1 March 1919 of influenza at Castle Douglas Cottage Hospital and buried in Balmaghie Parish Churchyard (CWG) Also listed on the Roll Of Honour of Balmaghie Church.


PROBR. NURSE MARION McQUEEN.
Not listed by CWGC - see earlier posts above.
Marion (May) McQueen, Probationer Nurse. Age 25.
Born 1893 at Gerranton Farm, Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire. Daughter of Charles and Marion (Sawyer) McQueen of Willowbank, Laurieston, Balmaghie.
Died 26 October 1918 while working at the Norfolk War Hospital, Norwich and buried in Balmaghie Parish Churchyard.

James Nelson, Private (S/7570) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Age 33.
James was a groom at Murrayfield House, Lockerbie when he enlisted in the 13th (Reserve) Battalion, A&SH in December 1914. He served with this unit (later known as the 41st Training Battalion) as Private and Lance Corporal (TR/1/12350) until December 1917. He was posted to the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion of the Argylls and joined the 10th Battalion in France in May 1918. He died in the No.10 General Hospital, Rouen.
Born 1885 at Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Girthon, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Mary Nelson of Bridge of Dee, Balmaghie.
Died of wounds 30 August 1918 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France. Also listed on the Roll of Honour of Balmaghie Church and on the Gatehouse War Memorial.


PTE. J. O'NEILL, RSF.

John O'Neill, Private (9739) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 29.
In 1911 John, age 24, was serving with the 1st Battalion, RSF in South Africa. He was probably a reservist and was posted to the 2nd RSF, landing with them at Zeebrugge in October 1914.
Born 1887 at Palnackie, Buittle, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Mary O'Neill. In 1891, age 4, he was living with his grandparents Bernard and Sarah O'Neill in Shankfoot Village, Balmaghie.
Missing in action 30 July 1916 and listed on the Thiepval Memorial, France.


PTE. W. SMITH, CAMERONS.

William Smith, Private (S/16300) 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. Age 28.
William was a ploughman at Bargratton Farm, Laurieston when he enlisted in December 1914. He joined his battalion in Belgium on 3 May 1915 but was killed by a sniper.
Born 1886 at Kempleton Mill, Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Elizabeth (Ferguson) Smith of Drumbreck Farm, Balmaghie. Killed in action 17 May 1915 and listed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. Also listed on the Roll of Honour of Balmaghie Church.

John Varney, Lance Sergeant (14305) 10th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Age 21.
Born 1894 at Netherton Cottages, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Ellen (Tait) Varney. An undergardener at Laurieston Hall, Balmaghie and then a motor-driver at The King's Arms, Dalbeattie he enlisted in September 1914 in the KOSB before transferring to the 10th Cameronians. Wounded at Loos on 25 September, he died at No.1 Base Hospital, Rouen.
Died of wounds 5 October 1915 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France. Also listed on the Roll of Honour of Balmaghie Church.


Lt. R. WALMESLEY, YORKSHIRE REGT.

Richard Walmesley, Lieutenant, 3rd attached to 2nd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. Age 23.
Born 1890 at Paddington, London. Son of John and Violet Liousa (Haworth-Booth) Walmesley of Chippenham, Wiltshire and, at some time, of Livingstone House, Balmaghie.
Educated at Eton and Cambridge he was gazetted as 2nd Lieutenant, Yorkshire Regiment, in August 1910 and promoted to Lieutenant in May 1912. With the 2nd Battalion he landed at Zeebrugge on 6 October 1914 and was killed near Ypres. "the first of the Regiment to fall"
Killed in action 21 October 1914 and buried in Aeroplane Cemetery, Belgium. Also listed on the Roll of Honour of Balmaghie Church.


TRPR. W. P. WATSON, AYRSHIRE YEO.

William Paton Watson, Private (2003) Ayrshire Yeomanry. Age 20.
Working with his father at Glentoo Farm, Balmaghie, William enlisted in November 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in October 1915.
Born 1895 at Glentoo Farm, Balmaghie. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Dunlop (Paton) Watson of Halferne Farm, Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Killed in action 28 December 1915 and buried in Pink Farm Cemetery, Helles, Turkey. Also listed on the Roll of Honour of Balmaghie Church and on an individual memorial there.


PTE. J. I. WILSON, KING'S LIVERPL.
Served under his birth name.
James Murray Ireland, Private (17855) 19th Battalion (3rd City) The King's (Liverpool Regiment) Age 30.
In 1911 James was a draper's assistant in Preston, Lancashire. He enlisted in September 1914 in Liverpool and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in November 1915. He died in the 43rd Casualty Clearing Station at Warlincourt Halte.
Born 1886 at Bridge of Dee, Balmaghie. Son of Euphemia Ireland of Bridge of Dee and of James Cowan Murray of Castle Douglas. Step-son of George Wilson who Euphemia married in 1888 at Balmaghie.
Husband of Jenny (Williams) Ireland of Barkeley Drive, Seaforth, Liverpool who he married at West Derby, Liverpool in 1915 when he was serving at Grantham Camp, Lincolnshire.
Died of wounds 22 March 1917 and buried in Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty, France. Also listed on the Rolls of Honour of Balmaghie Church and Rhonehouse School.

"Private Andrew Irving, 1st Battalion Scots Guards, and a brother of Mr George Irving, Cowar, Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbrightshire, has been mising since January 25. About that date the Guards were engaged in a fierce fight with the Germans near Givenchy. Private Irving is 18 years of age."

This church is being closed and will be sold - a final service is to be held on 14th June 2015 and the congregation will merge with Crossmichael. This memorial will obviously remain and I am currently trying to ascertain what will happen to the other memorials inside the church.
