Wanlockhead is the highest village in Scotland. That's a useless bit of trivia.

Meanwhile, here's some photos of the village memorial:

I spent some time in the Tolbooth Museum in Sanquhar (closed in winter months) and the attendant produced an excellent book about the memorial and allowed me to photograph a number of pages from it. There cannot be many copies of it around so this was very fortuitous. I shall post some more pages when I have had time to sort the photos. Higher res available on request as usual.

I think that is one of them remaining in the first photo, I guess the rest just died of old age Confused

By the way, I don't think the names in this roll of honour in the book are available on any memorial.

Found on my researching that this wee booklet was gifted to all Wanlockhead Service people or their families. It was produced in 1920 and the Author was W.G. Wilson, President of War Relief Society with contributors from John Mitchell Manager of the Lead Mines, Rev C. Patrick Blair Parish Minister, and John EdmondHeadmister.

This memorial was ordered on 2/5/1920 by Mr Thomas Gracie, Church St Wanlockhead, in Log Book No 3005 and erected 15/7/1920 by Beattie & Co Carlisle, cost £332.7/-. As a model for the figure Beattie obtained the services of a sergeant belonging to the Border Regiemnt who was based in Carlisle Castle.
Mr. McConnel of Eliock unveiled the Memorial.
Note the post address for Wanlockhead is Lanarkshire. This information collected when I visited Beattie & Co in July 2010.
Teddy.

Wanlockhead is in postcode district ML12 which has Biggar, South Lanarkshire as its post town. ML12 actually covers communities in South Lanarkshire, Scottish Borders and Dumfries & Galloway. Wanlockhead is in the latter.

Cheers

Adam, Thanks for note; I only highlighted this - as some people see themselves in Dumfries and Galloway and others in Lanarkshire - so for some a sore point; so just stated where postal address was.
Thanks, Teddy.
