I'm afraid I don't have a very good photo of the Great War names on the front of the memorial but I do have ones of the sides.

What caught my eye here was Chas F and Louis F Hoffman.
From the 1901 census, as I suspected, their father was a German national (not naturalised), their mother was Barbara Fraser.

Surname HOFFMAN
Firstname Charles Fraser
Service Number G/11500
Date Death 25/07/1916
Decoration
Place of birth Edinburgh
Other 11th Bn.
SNWM roll SCOTTISH CASUALTIES EXTRACTED FROM ENGLISH REGIMENTS

Name: HOFFMANN
Initials: C F
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment)
Unit Text: 11th Bn.
Age: 27
Date of Death: 25/07/1916
Service No: G/11500
Additional information: Son of Charles and Barbara Hoffmann, of 9, Victor Park Terrace, Corstorphine, Edinburgh.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: II. F. 105.
Cemetery: BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION (NORD)

Charles was actually named Karl.

I struggled with Louis though - he was actually named Ludwig and he served as;
Surname FRASER
Firstname Louis
Service Number 97128
Date Death 15/11/1918
Decoration
Place of birth Edinburgh
Other
SNWM roll ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS
Rank Pte
Theatre of death India.

Regiment/Service: Royal Army Medical Corps
Age: 27
Date of Death: 15/11/1918
Service No: 97128
Additional information: Husband of Annie J. Fraser, of 23, Derwent St., Sunderland, Tyne and Wear.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Face 11.
Memorial: KIRKEE 1914-1918 MEMORIAL

Here, the marriage index entries confirm the name change;
Marriages Dec 1915
Fraser Louis Watson Sunderland 10a 1533
Hoffmann Louis Watson Sunderland 10a 1533
Watson Annie J Fraser Sunderland 10a 1533
Watson Annie J Hoffman Sunderland 10a 1533

Obviously trying to disguise their German heritage, Louis particularly so.

Adam,

I am trying to make out the name between Geo. Shade and Stanley Smith.
Is it John Schiclls?

Mark

Yes you're right Shiells. The original isn't much clearer but the E is the same as the surname Robertson just above it.

What fantastic research work tracking down the Hoffman brothers. Who would have thought that Louis Fraser was actually Ludwig Hoffman!

Regards

Adam

My wife is playing the organ on Sunday inside the Parish Church so I will photograph the three inscribed columns of War dead. The organ is also a WW2 Memorial.

From The Scotsman, Saturday 16th May 1936.

    CORSTORPHINE WAR MEMORIAL

Negotiations have been proceding for some time between representatives of the Corstorphine War Memorial Committee, Corstorphine Ratepayers' Association, and the Corstorphine Branch of the British Legion regarding custody, re-erection, and maintenance of the war memorial. These negotiations, with the consent of the Corstorphine Ratepayers' Association, have resulted in the Corstorphine War Memorial Committee conveying custody of the memorial to the Corstorphine Branch of the British Legion, which branch, with agreement with the other two bodies, has carried on discussions with the Edinburgh Corporation regarding the removal. The result of the the discussions is that the removal of the war memorial to its more fitting an appropriate new site - exactly opposite the new library entrance - is to be commenced at an early date, and re-erection completed within two months. To meet the cost of removal, re-erection, and maintenance, an appeal to the Corstorphine residents for subscriptions is likely to be issued at an early date. Arrangements will also be proceede with for the holding of a re-dedication service.

From The Scotsman, Saturday 3rd October 1936.

    CORSTORPHINE WAR MEMORIAL

It was intimated at a meeting of the Corstorphine Branch of the British Legion that the result of the appeal for funds towards the removal of the War Memorial from its old site at Station Road to the present site at Kirk Loan had been most satisfactory. The interest in the Memorial was reflected in the fact that donations had been received from interested parties well outside the boundaries of Corstorphine. The total sum received was £82 7s 10d, and the expenses of the removal amounted to £63 7s 6d, leaving a balance of £19 0s 4d for the future upkeep - maintenance and cleaning - of the Memorial.

Another article in The Scotsman, a few weeks later on 28th October 1936 reports that in destructive strong winds the Corstorphine War Memorial had been blown over into the street and broken into three pieces.

A few lines beneath a picture in The Scotsman of 10th May 1948 tell of the unveiling of the Second World War panels on the memorial. The crowds were addressed by General Sir William Slim, and Lady Slim unveiled the new panels.
