Granton War Memorial
Location: In grounds of Granton Parish Church
OS Ref: NT 237 766

I'm not 100% sure if this is the community or a church memorial. I have put it in the civic section until someone says otherwise. There are no Second World War names on this memorial.

This memorial was originally sited at the previous Granton Parish Church (originally a Quoad Sacra parish within Cramond Parish) in Granton Road, just off Granton Square. The church moved premises to a new building in Boswall Parkway in 1936, but it seems the memorial did not move until some years later. Maybe that accounts for the absence of WWII names on that memorial - if it was still on the previous site at the end of that war.

See http://www.grantonhistory.org/churches/churches_18.htm for more information, and a picture of the memorial in its original location.

Had a look at the memorial after Pat's post on John Bell. His regiment is transcribed as Lovat Scouts but should be London Scottish;

As the author of the article in The Scottish Genealogist, could I correct one bit of the information given about Private John Bell in a recent post. He was not born in London. He was a local lad born at East Pilton Farm Cottages in the Parish of Cramond, Midlothian. The 1901 Census shows him still living there and gives his occupation as 'baker'. Before he enlisted he was working as a butler in the household of a naval officer in the South of England - presumably this accounts for him enlisting in the London Scottish.

As regards the transcription, there are two other corrections which could be made. John Irvine was in the Royal Iniskilling Fusiliers and Robert Morrison was in the Machine Gun Corps. Hector Douglas was indeed in the Canadian Army and probably his relations thought he was in something called the Canadian Scottish - actually he was in the Canadian Infantry Manitoba Regiment.

Jessie

The way the Canadian Expeditionary Force was raised did not follow the pattern of our own Army. In 1914 the existing Canadian Militia regiments did not form battalions to go to France (although they did later in the war). Instead they sent drafts to join war raised units.

The 16th (Manitoba) Bn of the Canadian Expeditionary Force was composed of drafts from four Canadian Highland Milita units. A large number came from the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders of Canada who were based in Vancouver in Britsh Columbia and not Manitoba (This Militia Regiment later raised the 72nd Bn CEF).

Beacuse all the drafts came from Highland regiments it became known as the Canadian Scottish.

You quite often see Canadian Scottish on Scottish war memorials but that doesn't mean they actually served in the 16th Bn CEF. There were several CEF units composed of kilted troops.

Apart from the 16th Bn I can remember of the top of my head there were also the 13th Bn, 15th Bn, 43rd Bn, 72nd Bn and 85th Bn. There may have been others.

Thanks

Thanks for the information about the Canadian situation. I see from his attestation papers that he answered 'Yes' to the question 'do you now belong to the Active Militia' and your information puts this in context.

Hector Douglas did, per the CWGC website, serve in the 16th Bn and died on 23 April 1915 in the 2nd Battle of Ypres

In my write up re Pte John Bell I said that he was a local lad who was born at East Pilton then a farm about a mile from Comely Bank Cemetery etc . Did not mention his birth was in London

I was interested in the article in relation to the military facts and also in the Lanark Sheriff Court as I have been on duty at Lanark Sheriff Court as a young Constable of the then Lanarkshire Constabulary in remand cases of Murder before the Sheriff at Lanark and the building would be the same court of law as was used in this case against Pte Cairns .

Interestingly on the Attestation paper he states he was in the Militia but had not served before. He as attested at Valcartier which was the main trainingg camp for the CEF. That suggests to me he signed up for one of the four Highland Regiments after the outbreak of war in their town and was then sent to Valcartier in Quebec where he was formally enlisted.

Unfortunately the form doesn't give any clues to which unit he had come from. I've found references to men from the 50th Gordon Highlanders of Canada being attested on the same day so he may have come in with one of their drafts from British Columbia?

For reference for others reading this here is his CWGC details

DOUGLAS, Hector
Initials: H
Nationality: Canadian
Rank: Corporal
Regiment/Service: Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment)
Unit Text: 16th Bn.
Date of Death: 23/04/1915
Service No: 28965
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 24 - 26 - 28 - 30.
Memorial: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL

The Attestation papers state his mother was living at 12 East Cottages, Granton when he enlisted on 23rd September 1914.

I have been researching the names on the Granton War Memorial and the first batch of biographical notes has been placed on the Granton History Group website - www.grantonhistory.org . More will follow in the next few months.
