The Scottish Genealogist December 2009 : Quarterly journal of the Scottish Genealogy Society pages 184 -186 has an article called
"Death on the Night Train to Edinburgh . The story behind the stone " by Jessie A Denholm .
The article covers the story of PTE 4191 J BELL, LONDON SCOTTISH death date as 7th November 1915 aged 31.
John Bell was a local lad who was born at East Pilton then a farm about a mile from COMELY BANK CEMETERY . His father Charles Bell was a farm grieve at East Pilton Farm . John became a baker and then a butler in the household of a naval officer in the south of England .
on the evening of 6th November 1915 he went to Euston Station London to join the 1130pm train to Scotland . He was going on leave and his parents were then residing at 3 Wardie Steps , off Lower Granton Road Edinburgh .
In the next compartment were 2 Belgian soldiers and a sailor and a Private William Cairns , 9th Seaforth Highlanders . Pte Cairns was seen kneeling with his rifle with his finger on the trigger and suddenly there was a loud explosion and it was found that John Bell was dead .
Pte Cairns was found Not Proven at the Lanark Sheriff Court .
Pte John Bell's funeral took place at the United Presbyterian Church , Trinity ( United Free Church now Wardie Parish Church ) on 11 November 1915 and then to Comely Bank Cemetery , Edinburgh.
