Hello,
Just wondered if I could ask a couple of questions. On the 1939/45 memorial , there is a Robert Bell but I can't read the letters following his name. I have saved it to my computer and tried to magnify it...no luck.

Also would someone who died in a training accident be remembered on such a memorial.

A/Gr Robert Bell R.A.F. is listed. I take it A/Gr is Air Gunner. Is this your man?

Generally it doesn't matter where or how a serviceman or woman died during the war. They will still be listed even if they died accidentally during training.

The last comment (about women) only applies to WW2 of course, in WW1 the situation was more varied, as I understand it, women were only considered to have a war grave if they died as a direct result of the war - I have instances of women listed on memorials who died for example of illness and therefore not a war grave but others in similar circumstances were not listed on their local memorial.

Thankyou both for the info. I am not sure if that was him....I thought he was in the army. He is buried in Old Monkland cemetry, lived in Coatbridge. I shall try to find out a bit more.

Hello,

Just checked my info re Robert Bell...he was in the RAF. He was a ground gunner...Aircraftsman First Class (AC1) Many thanks for your help. Glad he is on the memorial!

A few extra photographs taken on an Autumn evening. This is another one of my favourite memorials, its beautifully proportioned and has unusual Egyptian style columns with stylised acanthus leaves carved on the capitals.

Sorry its a wee bit late but here's a close up of Robert Bell's panel. It lists him as Aircraftman Second Class rather than First.

I agree with jamiemcginlay that this is a very attractive and quite unusual memorial. It was designed by Edith Burnet Hughes, who is generally considered to be the first female architect in Scotland (some sources have her down as the first in Britain). She won an open competition to design the memorial in 1924, with the memorial being erected in 1926.

Edith was the niece of the famous Glasgow architect J. J. Burnet, who was responsible for Glasgow’s war memorial in George Square, and (one of my favourites) the University of Glasgow’s Memorial Chapel.

I am currently research Irish men who died during the Gallipoli Campaign. I have located one soldier who had connections with Coatbridge, he was,

Age: 41 Date of Death: 22/08/1915 Cause: Died of wounds, Egypt, (Sustained Gallipoli).
Family Notes: Son of Alexander Forsyth; husband of Ann Jane Forsyth, of 3 Close, Summerlee Buildings, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire.
Grave/Memorial: K. 76. Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

I note that a Forsyth Haram 6th R.S.F., is named on the memorial; is it possible that this is HIRAM FORSYTH with errors made in in name and regiment?

I would appreciated any assistance in relation to this question.
