UKNIWM has recorded a memorial at Lochaline. The OS Ref locates it overlooking Loch Teacuis and quite far out of Lochaline.
This means it is probably at the end of the unclassed road which runs from the A884 past Loch Arienas. Google Maps Street View has gone half way along this road but not all the way. See here

I have been sending up any pictures and details of memorials in Highland Council area to the HER after realising that both the HER and RCAHMS have no record of most memorials. The best comment was on the entry in Canmore for Ardgour

It sounds as if no one had bothered to walk up the track. When I did so it was obvious that the memorial is built on one of the mountings of the WWI Royal Marine gun battery of which Canmore said there was nothing left!

I have NM 67712 44431, that looks about right when I drop on my map. I usually take a GPS reading as close as I can conveniently get, all my photographs are also Geocoded with the location where taken.
NM 660 540 is miles away!

I can see it now thanks, the UKNIWM entry is not even close! It's even marked on the OS map so I should have seen it before.
I have tracked it down on Google maps Street View now.

| In the North of Scotland the HER maps are good because you can get to a location much faster than the RCAHMS large scale maps but often even then it can be difficult because the OS often write "Memorial" some distance from the memorial though usually OK if you go right in to the largest scale. |

I took a few photos of this memorial when I was sailing in the Sound of Mull last Year. The village of Lochaline is built on the side of a hillside that slopes down to the Loch that gives it its name. The monument overlooks the Sound of Mull about halfway up the village.
I'll post the images when I find them,

Lochaline WM
This stands high on a mound at the south end of the village so it is easily seen from the Sound of Mull.
OSGB36: NM 677 444 [100m precision]
WGS84: 56:32.0604N 5:46.6834W
A 5m high pillar surmounted by a short armed cross. Constructed from 25 courses of rough dressed granite. The 2m base is trapezoidal with buttresses at each corner. The shaft and cross are square section. The inscription and names of fallen are on smooth rectangles of dressed granite. built into the courses. The inscription and 1939-45 names are on the east side of the shaft. The 1914-1919 names are on the west side of the shaft.

Note that WMR had duplicate reports for this memorial- 13468 and 44547. Because 13468 had the photographs attached, this is the record which has been retained (after moving some information from 44547 on to 13468, and 44547 has been disposed of.
As it happens neither report had the correct number of WW1 names
There is also 69555, which is a Roll of Honour in the Parish Church, which I don't think is on this forum. |
