Dear Anne and others,

Apolgies for not checking this forum for a long time and not responding to the photo request earlier. Anne, the work on the Ballater names is fantastic, great job.

Some details of carvings

Look closely at the cross wheel head. I didn't notice it when taking the photographs, I only noticed it when I had downloaded them but the celtic design is made up of Mills Bombs, '08 webbing, water bottles, bayonet and an entrenching tool.

Morrison William James Knowles Pte 27902 10th Cameronians b Keithhall e Aberdeen r Huntly 19 Killed in Action F & F 23-Jul-18 Husband of Jessie Morrison, Bridge St; Ballater. Maybe 7th Bn Black Watch S/41191 may 23rd or 24th Tullich MI Entry No 80 Soissons Memorial M. R. 18

Something wrong here and also at Huntly.
There was a William Morrison residing at Huntly who is listed by CWGC as 27902, but some of the details here do not tie up.
This man is also listed at Huntly and must be wrong.

The Huntly man was 27 and family members have confirmed he was the son of William Morrison, King St., Huntly., Husband of Mary Morrison ms McMillan, 26 George St., Huntly, Aberdeenshire.

An item on the CWGC website today caught my eye. It concerns a First World War Canadian soldier who has just been identified: https://www.cwgc.org/our-work/news/first-world-war-canadian-soldier-identified/

That soldier is Corporal George Herbert Ledingham who is named on the Ballater War Memorial. His details at the time I write this are:

Name: LEDINGHAM, GEORGE HERBERT
Initials: GH
Nationality: Canadian
Rank: Corporal
Service Number: 859287
Regiment/Service: Canadian Infantry, 43rd Bn
Date of Death: 1/10/1918
Age: 31
Additional Information: Son of the late Alexander and Barbara Ledingham, of Pauline Villa, Braemar Rd., Ballater, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Memorial: Vimy Memorial.

Location of the grave is Grave 32, Row C, Plot 2 in Canada Cemetery, Tilloy-lez-Cambrai.

There has been a "bit of a do" about the research credit of this case on the Canadian Expeditionary Force Study Group forum

On 19th November 2022 there was a service to recognise where he is buried. Check CWGC.
