MEMORIAL CHAPEL WITHIN THE 'PLACE OF WORSHIP'

The finely executed Memorial Chapel was initially set apart in memory of the congregation who fell in the two World Wars. The project was actively promoted by Rev Robert Dollar, the Minister of the Abbey Church from 1940 to 1969. The design is by James Shearer and the Chapel was dedicated in 1952.

This book is contained within the chapel and contains details, some more than others, on those from the Second World War.

Whilst on a visit to Dunfermline Abbey yeaterday, my 14 year old son, Ronan, found 5 wooden chairs within the Memorial Chapel with brass plates on them in memory of men killed in action during both wars.

Those remembered were:
Pte James West, Seaforth Highlanders, 1-2-16
Pte Alexander Spence, 1/7th Black Watch, 31-7-16
Pte Matthew Donaldson, Black Watch, 10-4-18
Sgt Stanley Arthur, Royal Air Force, 16-7-43
Pte Robert Fenton, The Gordon Highlanders, 25-9-44

The WWII ones are comemorated on the Roll of Honour within the memorial Chapel.

I tried to take photos of the brass plates, but they did not come out, however, here is a photo of the chairs.

While visiting the Abbey Church today, I came across this Bible lectern which is dedicated to Sgt. Robert Robertson. Details about him are shown above so I will not add any more information. Sorry about the poor quality of my picture.
