This memorial with 18 men listed on it is located in a tearoom/storeroom and out of the publics view in the sorting office in Fort William now.

Letter to the Editor : LOCHABER NEWS :

Sirs,

It has been brought to my attention via the Scottish War Memorials Project website that the Royal Mail took the War Memorial to the Fort William Sorting Office the Royal Mail agreed that the Great War and WW2 War Memorial would be on display to the public.

Sadly the Royal Mail has failed in that promise and the Fort William and District ornate memorial to the General Post Office staff of the Great War and 1939-1945 war is located behind lockers in a staff room of the said Sorting Office. I find that this is disrespectful to the Memory of the 15 Fort William and District GPO men who laid down their lives in the Two World Wars .

I agree that the preferred site would be in the Inquiry Office where it would be on public view but the newspaper report states there is a lack of space so the Royal Mail management should now sort out this problem and find a suitable location within their premises where the Public would be allowed to access under the supervision of their Royal Mail staff if a more public area can not be found . The former Parish Church in Arbroath is now a council office and the public are given permission to view the church war memorials under supervision of the council staff so this could be a way of allowing the public access until a better public viewing area is found for this important historical War Memorial for Fort William and District.

I would also ask the Royal Mail how they place their Poppy Wreath each Armistice Day at their GPO War Memorial if it is located behind staff lockers ? I would hope that the Royal Mail management continue this aspect of Remembrance on 11 November ?

Yours

Patrick W Anderson
