It occurred to me that I know where my local War Memorials are located but to others, with no knowledge of my area, they may not know where the memorials are to be found.

To this end, may I suggest that each thread contains a 1:50000 O/S sheet number and 6 figure reference number for each memorial where possible? (Do GPS systems use the O/S system?)

Borden Battery has also made a suggestion of a road map pertaining to each memorial?

I had thought of adding a link to Multimap with a marker showing where the memorial is.

Good idea, I'll try and do this from now on, and add it to the existing ones as I get the chance.

A small description of where a memorial is sited. e.g. "On main street opposite train station" or "At junction of A7 and A777" would help anyone wanting to visit the memorial in person as well.

Hello,

I see some are now posting OS grid references for Memorials.

Have you maps for these areas or is there somewhere on the net that they can be generated?

I would have to purchase several OS maps to include these details as the area covered is large.

regards,
Mark

Ordnance Survey

Click the big pink button marked "I want to get a map".

That should be suitable for your needs. Smile

Mark,
David suggested looking at "Multimap" to generate maps for the necessary areas and this looks very feasible.

eg this link should show the 1:25000 view of Hawick
http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?lat=55.4172&lon=-2.8072&scale=25000&icon=x

But what I can't get it to do is to mark a specific position or have the memorial placed precisely in the middle of a map so that it is clearly marked. Crying or Very sad

This memorial for Bedrule is better as it is actually marked on the map:
In theory you should be able to open up the link and then zoom or pan as required from it.

I think the best way to show a map is to use Windows Local Live.

Weblink here

It's easy enough to zoom in and out, you can switch between map and aerial photograph, and you can add "pushpins" to a selected location.

Once I get home tonight I'll try it for a few of my locations.

That IS clever - now I can centre the map on a particular memorial and it produces the exact grid reference.
So if someone produces a grid reference, all we'd have to do is enter that on the O/S website and it should take us straight to it Laughing

Well done David!

MMMM!

I can get into the map and stick a push pin in. However where is the grid ref generated?

I have installed software for 'locate me' but everytime I try it says I do not have the current one installed!?!

puzzled,
Mark

You have to take out the spaces so NO 020 202 would have to be entered as NO020202.

It used to give you the reference in the bottom left hand corner if you hovered your pointer over the map but thye've removed that function and you have to centre it to get the OS ref.

I don't have maps for all the photos I have, nor a GPS. i have tried to use the GR on NIWM but the first 2 I looked up were both wrong, by quite a long way, so I won't bother with that again. I am sorry, but I will have to bow out on the Grid Ref for now.

Folks

Try the ordnance survey Get-a-map website. It's the one I use for getting OS reference points:

I'm with Adam on this one - it seems to be the only workable solution I've found.
The only little snag with if is that it gives you a 6-figure grid reference number with lettering but in order to search for a grid reference using the same system again you must delete ALL the spaces contained in the grid reference e.b NT 123 456 should be entered in the search as NT123456
