The University of Strathclyde was founded in 1796 when John Anderson, Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University, left instructions in his will for 'a place of useful learning' - a university open to everyone. His vision was realised when Anderson's University opened later the same year. The University developed rapidly and, by the 1890s, had become a major technological institution with a wide reputation for research and learning. This success meant that money was needed for a new building. After a fundraising campaign by the governors, the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College Building - now the Royal College Building - was opened in George Street. In 1964, the enlarged Royal College was granted the Royal Charter and became the University of Strathclyde.

The Memorial is located in the entrance hall of the Royal College Building, George Street.

The memorial is inscribed as follows:

The front cover was designed by Campbell Mackie and hand tooled by Frederick W. Beattie in 1922.
The circular medallion shows the University emblem and around the emblem it is inscribed The Royal Technical College Glasgow 1796 - Mente Et Manu (Knowledge by hand and mind)

Officials and members of the Staff are indicated by an obelisk (†)

This man's unit caught my eye, 14th Bn Royal Scots. CWGC and SNWM both list him as 12th Bn. The 14th Bn was originall raised as a service battalion in K4 but was converted to a reserve battalion. Private Dobbie would then have gone to the front to serve in the 12th Bn.

Scanning the list, there are a least 3 names linked to the "Princess Irene"

At about 11.14 on the morning of 27th May 1915, Sheerness witnessed the destruction of the minelayer HMS Princess Irene which was on No.28 buoy about 3 miles WSW from the town centre. The ship had been built in Dumbarton, Scotland in the previous year to the order of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company but was requisitioned and converted for Naval use before she could sail to the Pacific. The Princess Irene had a complement of 225 officers and men, three of whom were ashore that morning as the mines were being primed on the ship's two mine decks. Also on board were a party of 80 or so Petty Officers from Chatham in addition to 76 Sheerness Dockyard workers who were completing tasks prior to the ship's planned departure to lay her mines on 29th May.

Without warning, the ship was blown to pieces and her remains, and the remains of those on board, were scattered over a wide area of the surrounding river and countryside. One of the Chatham Dockyard workers, David Wills, amazingly survived the explosion but few bodies were found. Those that were located were buried in Woodlands Cemetery in Gillingham. A memorial to those lost in both this and the Bulwark disaster is situated opposite Sheerness Railway Station.

Eugène Bourdon was a major in the French Army who was killed in action on 1st July 1916 in the French sector of the Battle of the Somme.

He is also listed on the Glasgow Art Club memorial where there is more information on him in our thread on the memorial, and the Glasgow Schgool of Art Roll of Honour.

Frank J. Shepherd BSc - Woolwich Arsenal, died in South Africa in 1917 after going there to to recuperate after his health failed.

Douglas Campbell Young - age 29 - Lieutenant: 4th Lowland (Howitzer) Brigade, 52nd Division, Royal Field Artillery.
Douglas was educated at the Collegiate School, Queen's Park, at Allan Glen's School and the Royal Technical College in Glasgow before he became the Assistant Manager in is father's chemical manufacturing company. He had served with the Dunbartonshire Mounted Rifle Volunteers and was commissioned in October 1914. He was promoted to Lieutenant with the 52nd Division Ammunition Column in Egypt in May 1915 before rejoining the 4th Brigade at Gallipoli where he contracted dysentery. He was evacuated to the 21st General Hospital in Alexandria where he died.
Born 1886 at Blairlogie, Perthshire. Son of Robert and Esther Margaret (Campbell) Young, of Hamilton Drive, Glasgow and of Castlehill, Rockcliffe, Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died on Active Service on 18 September 1915 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Allan Glen's School Roll of Honour and on the Colvend Parish War Memorial.
