I couldn' find Ian (Ion) in any of the primary databases. I noticed this in 'thePeerage.com'

Ion Lewis FitzGerald Campbell
b. 28 September 1925, d. 17 February 1950

Ion Lewis FitzGerald Campbell was born on 28 September 1925.1 He was the son of Ion Percy FitzGerald Campbell and Gwladys Mary Pugh. He died on 17 February 1950 at age 24 at Malaysia, killed in action while leading a patrol in the jungle.
Ion Lewis FitzGerald Campbell gained the rank of Captain in 1943 in the service of the Black Watch. He was with the Malayan Police between 1948 and 1950. He was decorated with the award of Colonial Police Medal (C.P.M.). He fought in the Malayan Campaign.

Mark

I was suprised when I couldn't find him in either the SNWM or Armed Forces Memorial Roll. It makes sense now that he was a policeman.

Couldn't see him on this list of Federation of Malaya Police who died in the Malayan Emergency.

A Captain aged 18. I'm surprised at that. More likely he joined the army aged 18 and was a Captain when he left.
