I understand that, some time ago, an arrangement was made whereby anyone wishing to visit this memorial could call at the office of the open cast coal mine (OS Map Ref NS 467 065) and they would arrange to escort the visitor through the mining area to the memorial. I hope to test this arrangement shortly.

Most of the names on this memorial are also listed on the Dalmellington War Memorial. This memorial gives ranks and regiments and the other memorial gives first names.

G. Neville on the First World War list and T. Bunyan on the Second World War list are not on the Dallmelington memorial

Made a couple of attempts to get there in recent years, must try harder. Need to enquire at the mine first to get escorted there as the memorial is on restricted coal mine property.

Just a wee word of warning. I tried to walk up the hill last summer starting from the track in Patna and walked smack into a very big bull right in the middle of the path, not fenced off. So I think it is something that would have to be oganised with the mine and the local farmer.

I have been meaning to contact the company to get up there for photographs. Maybe we would have a better chance if we applied as a group? If anyone is interested we could get together and make a joint application for access?

Cheers
Jim

Please include me if you are still thinking of a visit and I think Ken Morrison mentioned that he might be interested.

Although I never made it there, access was via a mine as it was on their land. Mining has now ceased so there is no access that way however a new work colleague has visited it recently. There is access via an alternative route via Dalmellington and Burnton, park at the site of a former public house and walk in - about a mile and a half. Wellies, map and compass are recommended. If anyone is thinking of visiting, let me know and perhaps we can meet up for a trip.
