This is the only Hiram (or Haram) Forsyth on SNWM

Surname FORSYTH
Firstname Hiram
Service Number 12984
Date Death 23/08/1915
Decoration
Place of birth Banbridge Co Down
Other 6th Bn.
SNWM roll SCOTTISH CASUALTIES EXTRACTED FROM IRISH REGIMENTS
Rank Pte
Theatre of death Egypt.

So I think pretty conclusive that it is the same man.

Hi milmor,

It's not uncommon for Civic Memorials to have the odd wee mistake or two, so I would think 'Haram' is Hiram and that 'Scottish' should be 'Irish'.

That's interesting, the memorial has two different spellings and neither matches the CWGC or SNWM details. It looks awfully like it could be the same man.

What's the difference between Old Monkland and New Monkland by the way? I thought one was Airdrie and the other Coatbridge but both are listed in this thread.

Thanks

Adam

I have a suspicion that there are duplicates in the Perth Golden Book, for one reason or another. First time I've seen it actually on the memorial itself though if it is the case!

Yes, you're right Adam.

Coatbridge is 'Parish' of Old Monkland and Airdrie is 'Parish' of New Monkland, but neither place is very far from the other.

New Monkland nowadays really refers to Glenmavis and Old Monkland refers to the area around Old Monkland Cemetery.

I'm working my way through Coatbridge Civic and adding/collating as much info as I can from churches/schools etc, so you can be sure I'll have plenty of queries coming up shortly!! Laughing

Anne,

I think this is a duplicate.I`ve been unable to find anything outwith CWG,SDGW,SNWM .The Coatbridge and the Great War book has a photo of a Trooper James Brannan under Yeomanry Regiments with no RoH info, however under the Royal Scots there`s a Pte James Brennan,no photo with RoH info (listed as 11th RS )

I believe that this is the Thomas Cox that is named on the memorial.
The memorial gives his unit as 7th R In F (Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers), a search of soldiers died and the Irish War Memorial Records shows no such soldier in 7th Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.

COX, Thomas Private 15815 5th Bn Royal Irish Fusiliers
Born: Midleton, Co Cork Resided: Midleton, Co Cork Enlisted: Coatbridge, Lanarkshire.
Age: 23 Date of Death: 16/08/1915 Cause: Killed in action.
Family Notes: Son of, John and Ellen Cox, of the Park, Midleton, Co. Cork.

Private Thomas Cox of the 5th Batt Royal Irish Fusiliers, killed in action on 16th September ulto, in Gallipoli. The deceased who was only 23 years of age, was the second son of Mr. John Cox. The Park, Midleton. Just a year ago he was amongst the first with the colours and joined Kitchener’s army. Previously he had been an employee of the Midleton Distillery, and his death has been learned with regret in his native town. Much sympathy is felt with the parents and family of the deceased on the demise of this gallant and worthy Irish soldier.
The Cork Weekly Examiner, 16 October 1915.

Grave/Memorial: Panel 178 to 180. Helles Memorial.

Adam

On the first WW2 pic, 3rd Panel, 5 down in the 'Rs' is a WAAF. I can't quite make out the surname looks like 'REID', Alice M. but cannot find a REID on CWGC is the surname clearer on the original photo please?

Unable to make out any other females, are there any?

Tony
