Dundonald - Kyle & Carrick District
OS Ref No. NS365346

The Dundonald war memorial is a grey granite celtic cross with wheel-head. The coss face and shaft have celtic designs carved in relief together with a wreath and downturned sword. The cross stands on a tapering pedestal and square base which in turn is set on a rough low cairn constructed of local stone. The commemoration and names of the WWI dead are set in lead lettering into the faces of pedestal. The commemoration on the face of the cross shaft reads:
THEY
COUNTED
NOT
THEIR LIVES
DEAR UNTO
THEMSELVES
The monument is situated at the junction of Drybridge Road and Kilmarnock Road.
The memorial was by monumental masons Messrs. Scott & Rae of Glasgow. The company daybook had the following entry:
Order No. 5530, Dundonald, Creetown cross, Erected December 1920, DayBook 239.
