UKNIWM Ref No. not listed

A very attractive memorial, one of the very few stained glass windows that I've seen on the subject.
Also interesting to note that the casualties from both wars are equal in number - another rarity.

The names on the first line of each entry are as they appear in a stained-glass window in the Parish Church, The ranks and service are from the paper Roll of Honour in the church.


JAMES BRIGGS - SGT. A.& S. HRS.
James Briggs – age 32 – Sergeant (S/11897) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James trained at Floors in Kelso and had been a gamekeeper on the Hirsel Estate near Coldstream, Berwickshire for 9 years prior to his enlistment in the spring of 1916. He joined his battalion in France later that year.
Born 1885 in Kelso, Roxburghshire. Son of Thomas and Isabella (Turner) Briggs, of Bowmont Forest, Kelso. Husband of Elizabeth Hannah (Darling) Briggs of Hollybrae, Birgham, Eccles who he married in 1910 in Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham.
Died of Wounds on 17 April 1918 and buried in Meteren Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Birgham village memorial in Eccles Parish.


WILLIAM COCKBURN - PTE. K.O.S.B.
William Cockburn – age 24 – Private (40074) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William joined the 2nd KOSB in France before transferring to the 7th/8th Battalion,
Born 1894 in Whitsome, Berwickshire. Son of Margaret (Cockburn) Hill and step-son of John Hill of Hassington Mains near Kelso (in Eccles Parish) and of Spittal-on-Rule, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 23 July 1918 and buried in Buzancy Military Cemetery, France.


R. COULTER - PTE. K.O.S.B.
Thought to be:
Ralph Coulter – age 19 – Private (200766) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Ralph was resident in the Coldstream area when he enlisted and as Private (7284) he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He then served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1898 at Middlefield, Langton, Berwickshire. Son of the late William Coulter (died 1902) and of Mary Catherine (Scott) Coulter. Step-son of Alexander Hastie who Mary married in 1908 in Edinburgh.
In 1911 in the whole family were living in Linton, Roxburghshire. (Ralph, 13 and George, 11 are indexed as Courter) and from 1915 were at Bankhead Farm, Linton.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the Kelso Town and District War Memorial and on the Linton Parish War Memorial.

JOHN COWE - PTE. SEAFORTH HS.
John Cowe – age 24 – Private (S/6670) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
John enlisted in October 1914 and landed with the 8th Seaforths at Boulogne in August 1915. He was wounded and evacuated to hospital in Dartford, Kent in October. He was in hospital again in August 1916 due to illness and after one of these he was posted to the 7th Battalion.
Born 1893 in Hutton, Berwickshire. Son of John Downie Cowe and Janet (Rutherford) Cowe of Fishwick, Hutton/Paxton and of Springwells and Kames West Mains, Leitholm, Eccles.
Missing in Action on 2 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Paxton Parish War Memorial in Berwickshire.


JAMES A. CRAIG - PTE. K.O.S.B.
James Anderson Craig – age 23 – Private (201455) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James joined his battalion as Private (8527) in Egypt and served in Palestine.
Born 1893 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Son of Adam and Catherine (Sked) Craig of Harlaw, near Kelso (in Eccles Parish)
Missing in Action on 31 May 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Kelso Town and District War Memorial.


ROBERT ELLIOT - SGNR. R.F.A.
Robert Elliot – age 19 – Gunner (186855) “A” Battery, 51st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Robert enlisted in early 1916 and joined his battery in France.
Born 1898 in Coldstream, Berwickshire. Son of William Marshall Elliot (chemist and druggist) and of Isabella Mary (Ryle) Elliot of 94 High Street, Coldstream and of Birgham, Eccles.
Died of Wounds on 6 June 1917 and buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on Coldstream Burgh and Parish War Memorial.

JOHN HALLIDAY - 2/LT. W. YORKS. REGT.
John Halliday – age 26 – Second Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment.
John was employed as a roadman at Leitholm, Eccles when he enlisted and as Private (S/3539) he landed with the 11th Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders at Boulogne in July 1915. He was wounded at Loos in September and again in December. After he had recovered he was posted to the 1/6th Argylls as Private (5840) and as Lance Corporal (252723) He was commissioned in the Yorkshire Regiment in January 1918 but he was reported as badly wounded and missing four months later.
Born 1892 in Ednam, Roxburghshire. Son of John and Catherine Laurie (Robertson) Halliday, of Eccles Mains near Kelso (in Eccles Parish).
Missing in Action on 8 May 1918 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


JAMES HARDIE - PTE. A.& S. HRS.
James Hardie – age 32 – Private (3593) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James of Leitholm, Eccles landed at Boulogne with the 11th Argylls in July 1915.
Born 1886 Ladykirk, Berwickshire. Son of Eleanor Hardie of Eccles. Husband of Kathleen May (Tubb) Hardie of 97 May Street, Basingstoke, Hampshire and of 13 Bath Road, Devizes, Wiltshire who he married in July 1917 in Basingstoke before he returned to France.
Killed in Action on 10 October 1918 and buried in Montay-Neuvilly Road Cemetery, Montay, France.


JOHN HARDIE PTE. K.O.S.B.
John Hardie – age 37 – Private (7251) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 John was working as a groom with John Frater, a horse dealer, at Careham just across the Tweed from Birgham, Eccles. He had served with the 3rd Royal Scots in the South African War and he enlisted in the KOSB Reserve in August 1914. He was working in Buckholmside Skin Works in Galashiels when he was posted to his battalion in December 1914 but he was killed three months later near Ypres.
Born 1877 in Coldstream, Berwickshire. Son of Annie Hardie of 72 High Buckholmside, Galashiels and of 9 Greenside Place, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 26 March 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Galashiels War Memorial.

CHARLES KERSE - L/CPL. R.A.V.C.
Charles Kerse – age 24 – Lance Corporal (SE/2150) 28th Division, 84th Infantry Brigade, Army Veterinary Corps.
Charles landed with the 28th Division at Le Havre in January 1915 but he contracted pneumonia and died in a Casualty Clearing Station in Bailleul. Born 1890 in Eccles. Son of the late Helen (Stenhouse) Kerse (died 1902) and of Charles Kerse of Birgham and of Eccles.
Died on Active Service on 18 March 1915 and buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery, Nord, France.


ANDREW NAIRN M.M. - PTE. K.O.S.B.
Andrew Nairn, Military Medal – age 23 – Private (200586) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a ploughman at Springwells Farm near Leithholm, Eccles when he enlisted as Private (6884) in October 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and survived the battle of Achi Baba Nullah in July. He was a battalion signaller and later served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was awarded a M.M. for mending wire entanglements under fire at Gaza in April 1917 but he was killed in November by the bursting of a shell.
Born 1894 at Oxenrig, Coldstream, Berwickshire. Son of James Nairn and Mary Margaret (Sandilands) Nairns of Kaimflat, Ednam, Roxburghshire.
Killed in Action on 23 November 1917 and buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Ednam Parish War Memorial.


WILLIAM W. NEIL - PTE. K.O.S.B.
Thought to be : but note all records spell the family name as NEILL.
William Watson Neill – age 29 – Private (7735) 4th (Reserve) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a ploughman at Hume Byres, Berwickshire when he enlisted in late 1914. He had been ill for some time at the Hawick Cottage Hospital before he was transferred to the 2nd Scottish General Hospital at Craigleith in Edinburgh where he died of pneumonia.
Born 1887 in Gordon, Berwickshire. Son of the late Georgina (Menzies) Neill (died 1912 in Grantshouse, Berwickshire) and of the late Alexander Neill (died 1915 in Hume)
Died on Service on 22 June 1916 and buried in Edinburgh (Comely Bank) Cemetery.
Also named on the Hume Parish War Memorial.

WILLIAM SOMERVILLE - PTE. CANADIANS
William Somerville – age 31 – Private (892086) 8th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
William was farming at Gladstone, Manitoba when he enlisted in the 190th (Winnipeg Rifles) Battalion in Winnipeg in March 1916. He was posted to the Battalion's Independent Forestry Company in February 1917 and sailed with the battalion from Halifax, Nova Scotia in May. He was transferred to the 18th Reserve Battalion in England in May 1918 and posted to the 8th Battalion in France in September but he was killed two weeks later.
Born 1887 in Carstairs, Lanarkshire. Son of William Somerville and of Rachel Alston (Stewart) Somerville (died June 1918) of Westertown, Carstairs and of Eccles Tofts, Eccles. Husband of Elsie Seddon (Palmer) Somerville of Elmwood, Winnipeg and of Molson, Manitoba who he married in December 1916 in Winnipeg.
Killed in Action on 29 September 1918 and buried in Sancourt British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Carstairs Parish War Memorial.

GEORGE SOMERVILLE - GNR. ROYAL NAVY

Not listed by CWGC.
George Somerville – age 21 – Ordinary Seaman (J64190) Royal Navy.
George was educated at the Berwickshire High School in Duns. He was a farmer at Elwart Law, Greenlaw, Berwickshire when he enlisted in December 1916 and he served on the battleship HMS Dreadnought from March to September 1917 but he was discharged from the navy due to illness in October 1917 and died of tuberculosis in a nursing home in Edinburgh.
Born 1897 in Carstairs, Lanarkshire. Son of William Somerville and of Rachel Alston (Stewart) Somerville (who died in Eccles a week after her son's death) of Westertown, Carstairs and of Eccles Tofts, Eccles.
Died on 15 June 1918.
Also named on the Greenlaw Parish War Memorial, on the Carstairs Parish War Memorial and on the Berwickshire High School memorial..

ROBERT S. WILSON - PTE. K.O.S.B.
Robert John Spence Wilson – age 26 – Private (29855) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert had been a gardener at Sunlaws House, Roxburgh for 9 years when he enlisted in the KOSB Reserve in December 1914.
Born 1890 at Fairnington Farm, Roxburgh, indexed as Robert Spencer Wilson. Son of Robert and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Wilson of Springwells Farm, Leitholm, Eccles.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Kelso Town and District War Memorial and on the Roxburgh Parish War Memorial.

1939-1945

JOHN BELL - SGT. R.A.F.
John Bell – age 20 – Sergeant (657296) 40 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
John's Wellington Bomber had taken off from RAF Luqa on Malta for a raid on Sfax in Tunisia but the aircraft was shot down.
Born 1922 in Stichill, Roxburghshire. Son of the late William Bell and of Isabella Mitchell (Bain) Bell of Byrewalls, Gordon, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 31 December 1942 and named on the Malta Memorial, Malta.
Also named on the Gordon Parish War Memorial.


ROBERT M. BELL - PTE. K.O.S.B.
Robert Moffat Bell – age 28 – Private (3193875) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was employed by a timber merchant in Kelso and was the first man from Birgham in Eccles to fall. The 1st KOSB returned to France on D-Day, 6th June, landing at ‘Queen’ Beach. They fought through Normandy and around Caen. Robert was killed near Cambes and was re-interred at Douvres in May 1945.
Born 1914 in Glasgow. Son of the late William Young Bell (died 1933) and of Isabella (Moffat) Bell of Birgham, Eccles and of Highridge Hall, Ednam, Berwickshire. Husband of Alice Elizabeth (Main) Bell, of Glass, Aberdeenshire who he married in 1942 in Glass.
Killed in Action on 12 June 1944 and buried in La Delivrande War Cemetery, Douvres, France.
Also named on the Birgham village memorial in Eccles Parish.


IAN BUCHAN - CPL. CAMERONIANS
Ian Mungo Buchan – age 22 – Corporal (3254245) 1st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment)
Ian's family had come to Birgham, Eccles when he was five. He was educated there and at Kelso High School before serving his apprenticeship as a joiner in Birgham. He enlisted in January 1942 and served in the Cameronians before transferring to the Royal Fusiliers. Ian's remains were recovered from the battlefield and re-interred in Florence in February 1945.
Born 1922 in Perth. Son of the late John Buchan of Perth and of Elizabeth Buchan of the Schoolhouse, Birgham, Eccles.
Killed in Action on 17 September 1944 and buried in Florence War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Birgham village memorial in Eccles Parish.
