Schools are an untapped source of war memorials in Scotland. To date we've got war memorials and rolls of honour from 100 schools from all over Scotland but 60 of them are from only four areas (Dumfries & Galloway, Dundee & Angus, City of Edinburgh and Perth & Kinross). Given what we now know about the vast numbers of memorials and rolls which were created just after the Great War I wouldn't be surprised if every High School or Academy which existed at that time had one.

This is a bit of a long shot but does anyone know if there would be a list somewhere, which was published at that time, either at a county or national level, of higher grade schools? With a list of schools from that period we can perhaps work through the list seeing if the present day schools have a memorial on display or in storage.

I'm also going to paste this on the Talking Scot forum so I'll update you with any progress there.

Regards

Adam

The feedback from Talking Scot is that local studies libraries are probably the best bet to start with. The Central Library in Edinburgh, The Mitchell Library in Glasgow and Stranraer Library are three I know of which have areas which concentrate on local records. I'm sure all local authorities will have at least one.

The TS thread also confirmed five memorials / RoHs in these schools:

Clydebank High
St. Mary's Primary School, Greenock
Greenock Academy
Inverclyde Academy (the Greenock High RoH)
St. Columba's, Greenock

Four in Greenock alone. I'm sure there are many more out there still to trace.

Regards

Adam
