Located a short way from the village on the Duns road, this lychgate is set with two slate panels bearing the names of the fallen. The text 'Greater love hath no man' is carved over the entrance.

The Holme brothers, who are the first names on this War Memorial are also listed on the Bolton War Memorial Fountain over the Lammermuirs.

FRANK ANDERSON Pte. 1/4 K.O.S.B. 12th JULY 1915.
Frank Anderson – age 23 – Private (7619) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Frank enlisted in January 1915 and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1892 in Ettrick, Selkirkshire as Francis. Son of John and Mary (Armstrong) Anderson of Kippetlaw, Cattleshiels, Longformacus.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


WILLIAM ANDERSON Pte. 7th A.& S.H. 2nd SEPT. 1918.
William Anderson – age 19 – Private (S/22705) 1/7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
William was a shepherd when he enlisted in November 1917 and joined his battalion in France in April 1918.
Born 1898 in Longformacus. Son of William and Isabella (Ramage) Anderson, of Scarlaw, Longformacus.
Killed in Action on 2 September 1918 and buried in Brown's Copse Cemetery, Roeux, France.


JOHN BUCKHAM Pte. 2nd K.O.S.B. 25th SEPT. 1916.
John Buckham – age 20 – Private (40070) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 John, aged 14, was living with his grandmother Jane Buckham in Greenlaw, Berwickshire and he was still resident there when he enlisted.
Born 1896 in Longformacus. Son of Adam and Elizabeth (Grant) Buckham of Rawburn Cottage, Longformacus.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1916 and buried in Serre Road Cemetery No.2, France.
Also named on the Greenlaw Parish War Memorial.


ROBERT DAVIDSON Pte. ROYAL FUSILIERS. 26th OCT. 1917.
Robert Davidson – age 19 – Private (G/67469) Royal Fusiliers, posted to the 2nd Battalion, London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers)
Robert was a mechanic in Luke's Motor Garage in Duns, Berwickshire when he enlisted in April 1917.
Born 1898 in Swinton, Berwickshire. Son of George and Mary (Spratt) Davidson of Rigfoot Farm, Longformacus.
Killed in Action on 26 October 1917 and buried in Cement House Cemetery, Belgium.

ARTHUR DOUGLAS FERGUSON LIEUT. SEAFORTHS. 12th OCT. 1917.
Arthur Douglas Ferguson – age 36 – Lieutenant, 1/6th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Arthur was educated at Edinburgh Academy and at Edinburgh University before he became a Chartered Accountant. He was commissioned in the Seaforths in January 1916 and promoted to Lieutenant in January 1917.
Born 1881 in Edinburgh. Son of the late Jessie Baird (Smith) Ferguson (died 1914) and of Frederick Ferguson of Forbes Road, Morningside, Edinburgh.
Nephew of Andrew Smith of Whitchester House, Longformacus and of Cranshaws Castle, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Edinburgh Academy memorial, on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and Roll of the Fallen, and on individual plaques in Cranshaws Parish Church and in the former Longformacus Parish Church


ALEXANDER CHARLES HOLME LIEUT. 1st GLOUCESTERS. 6th SEPT. 1914.
Alexander Charles Holme – age 25 – Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment attached to the 3rd Battalion, Nigeria Regiment, W.A.F.F.
Alexander was educated at Charterhouse School in Surrey before attending the Royal Military College at Sandhurst from where he was commissioned in the Gloucestershire Regiment in March 1909. He was promoted in July 1911 and served in India until his battalion returned to England when he transferred to the West African Frontier Force in 1912. Alexander was killed during the invasion of German Kamerun by British forces from Nigeria and he was buried in Nsanakang European Civil Cemetery.
Born 1888 in Mussoorie, Northern India. Son of Charles Henry Holme and of Eva Magdalen (Machell) Holme of Rawburne, Longformacus.
Killed in Action on 6 September 1914 and named on a special memorial in Limbe Botanical Gardens Burial Ground, Cameroon.

and his brother

RONALD HENRY PAULL HOLME LIEUT. 2nd K.O.S.B. 9th NOV. 1914.

Ronald Henry Paull Holme – age 24 – Second Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Ronald was educated at Haileybury College in Hertfordshire before attending the Royal Military College at Sandhurst from where he was commissioned in the KOSB in October 1910. He landed with his battalion at in August 1914 but he was wounded at Messines in October and was evacuated to hospital in London where he died.
Born 1890 in Rurki, Northern India. Son of Charles Henry Holme and of Eva Magdalen (Machell) Holme of Rawburne, Longformacus.
Died of Wounds on 9 November 1914 and buried in Longformacus New Burial Ground. (CWG)

The brothers are also named on the Episcopal Christ Church memorial in Duns and on the Bolton Parish War Memorial in East Lothian where the family were closely connected with Eaglescarnie, Haddington.

JAMES IRELAND L/Cpl. 1/4 K.O.S.B. 18th SEPT. 1918.
James Ireland – age 21 – Lance Corporal (201050) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 James, aged 14, was in Longformacus with his family.
Born 1897 in Dornock, Dumfriesshire. Son of Margaret (Ireland) Elliot of Stobswood, Langton, Duns, Berwickshire.
Margaret married Alexander Elliot in 1903 in Dornock, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 18 September 1918 and buried in Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Langton Parish War Memorial in Gavinton, Berwickshire.


JAMES LEITCH Pte. 1/4 K.O.S.B. 12th JULY 1915.
James Leitch – age 24 – Private (7227) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James enlisted in November 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Babab Nulah.
Born 1891 in Longformacus. Son of the late Matthew Leitch (died 1912) and of Elizabeth (Calder) Leitch of Longformacus.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


BERNARD McLAREN Pte. 9th BLACK WATCH. 9th MAY 1915.
Note the battalion and date of death variations.
Bernard McLaren – age 19 – Private (S/7062) 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Bernard was learning farming with Mr Pate at Redpath Farm. Longformacus when he enlisted in the Autumn of 1914. He joined his battalion in France at the end of April 1915 but he was killed three weeks later.
Born 1895 in Chorlton-Cum-Hardy, Manchester. Son of the late Edward McLaren (died 1897 in Chorlton) and of Margaret (Doyle) McLaren of 38, Upper Warwick Street, Prince's Road, Liverpool. Grandson of the late John H. McLaren of Normanton, Birkenhead.
Missing in Action on 18 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
His brother Edward McLaren, Military Medal – age 26 – Lance Corporal (23109) 20th Battalion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment) was killed on 8 September 1917 and is buried in Torreken Farm Cemetery No.1, Belgium.
