ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF BURGHEAD TO THE MEMORY OF THEIR FELLOW TOWNSMEN WHOSE LIVES WERE SACRIFICED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919. WHAT DOTH A MAN LIVE FOR? TO SERVE HIS FELLOWS, TO HONOUR HIS COUNTRY, TO GLORIFY GOD AND IF HE DIE IT IS TO SHOW THAT THESE ARE BETTER THAN LIFE. THEIR NAME LIVETH FOREVERMORE. ECCLESIASTICUS 44.14

ALSO SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO PAID THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945

GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS. JOHN CH.16V.13

If asked, I will happily post on the forum (or email individuals) that part of the Memorial that contains the details of a specific individual. Furthermore, I would also be prepared to email higher resolution photographs of this War Memorial.

UKNIWM Ref no: 8702

Some more photos of the panels.
The mercat cross style memorial was designed by Mr. J. Wittet, artchitect of Elgin and constructed of local freestone from the Greenbrae quarries near Hopeman, and with granite panels. The crests of the Seaforths and R.N.R. were cut into the facing panel. The square pedestal with pilastered corners supports a corinthian column crowned by a lion with shield. Total height is 16 feet.
The memorial was unveiled by Captain J.F. Cumming on Sunday 10th April 1921, followed by Mrs. Mitchell of Dallas placing a wreath at the base.
(Refs. The Courant, 19th March 1920 & The Northern Scot 16th April 1921)
