Hi

I've got this photocopy of a Great War memorial & ROH in my file which indicates that it was from Donaldson's College in Edinburgh. I'd scribbled the source on it:

"A Silent Destiny: A brief history of Donaldson's College and the origins of education of deaf children in Edinburgh..." by George Montgomery, published by Scottish Publishers Workshop, 1997, Page 32

One name caught my eye here but I couldn't find him in the usual databases.

Hinton D Anderson.

There's only one Benjamin Burns in the SNWM and CWGC databases

BURNS, BENJAMIN

Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Date of Death: 06/05/1915
Service No: 11920
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 22.
Memorial: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL

Regards

The Leith Observer ROH is the only place I have found reference to Hinton D Anderson. It states:

"Anderson, Hinton D., age 19, 9 Thorntree Street, Gunner (Naval RNR), drowned at sea 21/09/1915."

Might be worth checking out death certs at Register House in order to see if this was a locally recorded death. Could potentially be a non-com if war related death.

LiT

If Anderson was on active service then I think he should be commemorated. I will post something about him in the non-comm section.

Thanks

Adam

Can you confirm the date of death in the Roll of Honour? The date given in the Leith Observer list dated 5 April 1919 is 21st Dec 1915.

Thanks for clearing it up.
I wondered if the 1919 list and the Roll could differ. This man is a mystery, the story continues on the Non Comms section. There is no sign of him having died anywhere. On that day 25 sailor died, including 19 on a minesweeper.

It does not follow that because he was in a nautical service he must be commemorated by CWGC. The term " drowned at sea " is not usual for describing a death due to enemy action.
