|
On 17th January 1985 three men from Glencorse Barracks, Penicuik were shot and killed in what became known as the payroll murders.
Staff Sergeant Terence Hosker RAPC is listed on Armed Forces Memorial and is buried at Bradford
Private John Thomson KOSB is listed on Armed Forces Memorial, was from Earlston, Berwickshire and is buried at Heatheryett Cemetery, Galashiels
Major David Cunningham age 56 is not listed on Armed Forces Memorial so I suspect, given his age, he was a retired officer employed as ROIII or possibly ROII. Does anyone have any further info?
Does anyone know if there is a memorial to this tragic event or if any of the men are named on memorials in Scotland?

Good old wikipedia, Major Cunningham was a retired officer from the Royal Scots. Does anyone know where he was from?

I remember it very well, it was all the more shocking when it transpired that the culprit was one of their " brothers in arms "
They are not likely to be on SNWM or a war memorial as the did not die in a " conflict " _________________ Jim

Jim
I remember it as well. It was widely reported. I'm sure they were ambushed on a back road and it was quite snowy.
I think the local paper may have had an article about this last week because of the 25th anniversary. I'll have a look at what I can find.
Thanks

There was an article in last week's Sunday Post but it didn't mention where Major Cunningham's home town or whether there was any memorial.
As a member of the RAPC, I did many payroll runs from the bank in Colinton to Redford Barracks (with many times the £19,000 in this case) and it was an absolute rule, no lifts, and no stopping, even for road accidents etc. Now I know why.

That's where I saw it. I didn't get a chance to read it but I saw the headline.
There may well have been something in the local paper though. I'll check their website.
Thanks
