I see 'Charles McDonald' listed on the war memorial at Stevenston but no Hugh McVean. I think an obituary/casualty report from the local Ayrshire paper may hold the key to this one. |

Charles McDonald's Medals are for sale here - with a tantalisng glance at a fairly decent article about him.

There is also a reproduction photo. Callander Kirk has a memorial containing photos of all the men on the memorial so that may be another line of confirmation, or not. |

Mark, He did use an alias.
I had only briefly checked before going out when I made the above statement.
I have now studied the record further and find it actually confirms it was an alias. I will check to see if this warrants an update of the record and will let you know. _________________ Jim

Mark
The details of the alias will be forwarded to CWGC.
I understand CWGC are currently rethinking how they deal with alias names and may even drop them as separate entries keeping only real names with a note of an alias. IFCP has supplied dozens of new alias names but none have been actioned pending the deliberations.
Some aliases are not aliases!
Men joined under an alias but then signed the appropriate forms admitting the offence and thereafter used their real name. That does not seem to be the case here. Others changed their name permanently to one other than that of their family and so it was not an alias as far as they were concerned.
That might be the case here since both names were detailed in the Strathearn Herald item you transcribed. Clearly locals knew him by both names. _________________ Jim
