Hi everyone,

I'm trying to get more information on my GGF David Allan. He was born in Glasgow 1888, married to Helen Dunlop in 1906 and had two boys, my GF Thomas Henry and David who died in WW2 and served in The Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regt)

My GGF died in WW1 but there are a couple of David Allan's that enlisted and that were born in Glasgow and I hope to find more information out if I can pinpoint which is correct.

I have looked on Military Genealogy, Ancestry and CWGC and on the regiment web pages and managed to whittle the list down to just the two below.

David Allan regiment number 12395 d 11/04/1918 THe Kings own Scottish Borderers
David Allan regiment number 240621 d 13/04/1918 The Highland Light Infantry 6th (City of Glasgow)

Although I strongly think that my David was more likely to have served in the Highland Light Infanty, my Grandfather said that my GGF's name was on a memorial in Edinburgh, which makes me think it might be the first David!! Otherwise, why would a man born and bred in Glasgow, serving in the City of Glasgow regiment, be on a memorial in Edinburgh?

I have looked through the memorial lists here, and still can't find either one of them. Any help from anyone would be invaluable. Fantastic site by the way, well done to all of you.

The David Allen with the number 12395 was born in Glasgow according to SNWM.

The following are the only entries for David Allen in the Glasgow Evening Times Roll of Honour

Allan David Glasgow Private Highland Light Infantry 1/6th date of death 12-Jul-15 date in ET 13-Aug-15 page 6 Killed in action
Allan David Glasgow Lance Corporal Highland Light Infantry date in ET 28-May-18 page 4 Y Killed in action

hopefully someone will be along soon who has access to the City of Glasgow Roll of Honour.

Good luck

\Paul

It's just dawned on me that your grandfather probably meant the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle which holds Rolls of Honour for all the Scottish regiments.

Bruce

Does any of the family have his medals or ID tags? If so, they will have his service number on them.

Thanks for all your replies. Looking at all the various websites, I have managed to whittle it down to just the two, so I know it is not any of the others, just 12395 d: 11/04/1918 or 240621 d ; 13/04/1918.

Unfortunately, there is nothing from the family. My GF did not talk about his childhood at all. He and his brother were evacuees and after the war returned to Glasgow, but the conditions were so bad, he went back to the people he had been evacued to!! My Dad has also died, so that's why I want to try and find out as much as possible, to make sure no one else forgets him......It's really hard being so far away (Somerset!)
