The Alma Works & Netherward Works, ARBROATH were closed down /demolished and the Stone Memorial was delivered for safe custody to the Signal Tower Musuem , Arbroath which was nearby the Works. Delivery to the Angus Council - Signal Tower Musuem would be a short time before seen at the Premises during a date in APRIL 1993 .

The heavy stone section War Memorial was positioned outside the main Signal Tower but within the enclosed yard of the Museum .

The War Memorial was coloured grey with black lettering . The memorial was headed with the words, " ALMA WORKS "

Then rank , full name of casualty , year of death , Battalion and Regiment / Corps served and the first casualty listed attached Battalion and Regiment.

The lower part of the memorial is headed " NETHERWARD WORKS " and has again Rank , full name of casualty , Regiment or Corps and year of death .

No other wording on the Memorial

Thanks to John Burnett for his kindness in adding my pics to the website . This pic was taken from an old photograph taken April 1993 of the Memorial lying at the Signal Tower Museum at Arbroath having just been delivered for their Safe Keeping . The then Curator , Margaret King told me of its presence so I went outside and photographed it in situ : a heavy item of granite .

I received a phone call from James Webster regarding the Alma Works & Netherward Works war memorial and he found it is now located in the new housing development of the former Alma Works now known as Weavers Close , Arbroath.

The War memorial to the Alma Works and Netherward Works is located in the entrance area of the housing development .

There is a plaque on the outside wall of the housing development recording Rt Hon Michael Forsyth MP , secretary of State for Scotland offially opened the new housing development at Weavers Close , Arbroath on 24 June 1996 . - Developed by Hillcrest Housing Assoc

I had a press release to the Courier & Advertiser for the Angus & Mearns editions and they published the story of the missing Alma Works and Netherward works war memorial Arbroath in their daily newspaper for 28th November 2009 under the heading of Memorial's New Home a Mystery :

http://www.thecourier.co.uk/output/2009/11/28/newsstory14177483t0.asp

The Arbroath Herald (weekly newspaper ) had a story in its newspaper for Friday 4 December 2009 under the heading of Mystery Surrounds Memorial's Whereabouts

http://www.arbroathherald.co.uk/news/MYSTERY-SURROUNDS-MEMORIAL39S-WHEREABOUTS.5878407.jp

Good to hear that this "missing " war memorial is in its old Alma Works which is nowadays flats . Strange that none of the residents did not contact the two newspapers but they may not have noticed that this was a war memorial in their foyer !

Was passing with my camera today and one of the householders was kind enough to let me in and take a snap.

Nicely mounted and lit (which makes the polished granite hard to photograph) but good that it has been preserved and re-erected close to its original site.

Apparently the plaque has been in situ for at least seven years...

Well done to Pat (Keptie) for his determination in tracking this one down.

COURIER & ADVERTISER , SATURDAY , 2 nd January 2010 :

"LOST " MEMORIAL IS FOUND .

THE MYSTERY surrounding the whereabouts of a memorial plaque commemorating the sacrifice of ARBROATH factory workers in the First World War has been solved.

LETHAM resident PATRICK ANDERSON , who is involved with the on line Scottish War Memorials Project , put out an appeal for information recently when he discovered the plaque honouring employees of ARBROATH'S ALMA AND NETERWARD FLAX MILLS had disappeared .

Mr Anderson knew that in 1993 the plaque had been removed from its original location and temporarily taken for safe keeping to the Town's Signal Tower Museum .

However , Mr Anderson returned to the museum only to find that none of the current staff know what had happened to it.

Mr Anderson said ,"I received a phone call from James Webster regarding the plaque and he told me it is now located in the housing development occupying the site of the former ALMA WORKS , which is now appropriately known as Weavers Close.

The Alma /Netherward plaque has special significance for Arbroath as the first name listed on it - --- Second Lieutenant JOSEPH FRAIN WEBSTER ---- was the son of the Mill Owners.

The Scottish War Memorials Project - which aims to record all of Scotland's civic, church, regimental , unit , school and other war memorials and collate details of the individuals commorated - contains a wealth of information from the Angus and Dundee areas , and can be found at warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com

( P.S. an excellent write up by the Arbroath reporter of the Courier & Advertiser regarding the Alma Works & Netherward Works Memorial )

And a nice plug for the forum too!

It's great to see this plaque in such good condition and in its original location. Well done to all those involved in its relocation whoever they are.

Regards

Adam
