The village memorial is on the gable end of the Richmond Memorial Hall just off the village square

I take it the memorial tablets were on the wall of an old hall which was replaced in the 1980s by the looks of it.

Not the most stunning of memorials but it looks well maintained for what it is. I'm sure a little more thought could have produced something a little better though.

Note how many men served in Highland Regiments in the Great War. Out of 32 names there is one Scots Guards, one Scots Greys, one Royal Field Artillery and one HLI. The other 28 are all Highlanders. Also there are no officers listed for WW1.

Adam

It is hardly surprising the those from the Parish of Tomintoul served in Highland regiments, Seaforths and Gordon Highlanders being the local ones.

Scots Greys seemed odd. I checked and in both cases S.G. refers to Scots Guards, quite possibly policemen in civilian life.

James

I see two Scots Guards listed now. Here is Trooper Thomas Gillan, Royal Scots Greys.

Name: GILLAN, THOMAS
Initials: T
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys)
Age: 26
Date of Death: 28/12/1917
Service No: D/7637
Additional information: Son of Mrs. Sarah Gillan, of 32, Main St., Tomintoul.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: C. 21.
Cemetery: TOMINTOUL (ST. MICHAEL) ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCHYARD

You quite often see Machine Gun Corps, Engineers and Service Corps listed, and more often than not in rural areas Canadians or ANZACs but there are none of these listed on Tomintoul’s memorial.
