Staff Nurse Elizabeth Harkness is recorded on Crosshill War Memorial but is not listed by CWGC. Throughout her nursing career she called herself Bessie Harkness and is commemorated by this name on the Scottish Military Nursing Services Memorial in St. Giles Kirk, Edinburgh and at York.

She was born Elizabeth Harkness on 15th May 1892 at Bairds Mill, Kirkmichael, Crosshill, Ayrshire daughter of James Harkness, Miller and Jessie Harkness ms Smith.
She trained as a nurse at the Royal Alexandra Infirmary, Paisley, between February 1914 and 1917 and applied to join Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve in June 1917. Bessie was appointed as a Staff Nurse to Bagthorpe Military Hospital, Nottingham, in October 1917.
She died on April 11th 1919 at Bagthorpe of acute bronchitis. If returned home, I expect she may be buried in the Maybole / Crosshill area.

Staff Nurse Elizabeth / Bessie Harkness QAIMNSR has been forwarded as a case to CWGC / MOD as an in service death Non Comm.

If anyone has knowledge of her place of burial I would be interested in the details.

Adam

I hope to learn in the next few days if she is buried locally. If not I will need to get someone to access a local paper for me. If her grave cannot be located she will end up on the Brookwood Memorial ( UK 1914-1918 ).

Update 23 Sept 2009

I am now aware that Bessie Harkness was buried at Crosshill Cemetery on 19th April 1919 and that she is commemorated on the family headstone there.
