Pte A Daniels - Royal Defence Corps is listed on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

Nil entry in the CWGC database matching surname and Corps.
2 deaths listed in Scotland between 1/1/17 and 31/12/20 but none have a Hawick connection.

Any ideas where I go with this man? Idea

Well if he was Royal Defence Corps he would not have died overseas so that rules out this man

Surname DANIELS
Firstname Andrew
Service Number 316344
Date Death 05/01/1918
Decoration
Place of birth Ancrum Roxburghshire
Other 13th Bn. formerly 3891 Scot. Horse.
SNWM roll THE BLACK WATCH (ROYAL HIGHLANDERS)
Rank Pte
Theatre of death Salonica.

I don't think he is commemorated on CWGC but whether he should be or not depends on if he died in service, and if not, what he died of so I think it is time to find his death certificate and I would look up to perhaps 1921.

Derek
Was the memorial unveiled on 31/12/20 ? If not what was the date.

He may have been former R.D.C. and died of natural causes. Being it that unit suggests he was not a young man, probably ex service and possibly not 100% fit. He will not have died overseas.

I've widened my search and there are still only 2 deaths recorded in the Scottish records between 1914 and 1924 to the name of A.Daniels and 1 of these was a Military Return.
The first is the Andrew Daniels that Spoons submitted:

Name: DANIELS, ANDREW
Initials: A
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Unit Text: 13th Bn.
Age: 49
Date of Death: 05/01/1918
Service No: 316344
Additional information: Husband of Mary B. Daniels, of 34, Beaverbank Place, Edinburgh.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: III. B. 17.
Cemetery: LAHANA MILITARY CEMETERY

Interesting to note his death at the age of 49 and that Ancrum is only 10 miles or so from Hawick.

I'd have thought that a Royal Defence Corps death would have been most certainly at home.
So the second death listed is for an ALFRED DANIELS who was killed by a car in Dirleton District on 25th February 1918.
He is listed as a bricklayer, the husband of Agnes Taylor and their home address is given as Campbell Street in Glasgow.

The R.D.C. was only estabished in 1917 so he must have died after that.

He could have died elswhere in the UK, during and after the war.

If A. Daniels first name was confirmed that would be of great help.

A stab in the dark -

An Albert Daniels died December, 1918 at Woolwich, aged 28. (Woolwich War Hospital ?).

According to Ancestry (I know) there are no A. Daniels in the 1901 Scottish Census.

I'm afraid that is the sum total I have on the man. The only mention I have seen is on the Hawick Roll of Honour and simply states:

Pte A. Daniels - Royal Defence Corps

I think it would be worth searching the local papers for Jan/Feb 1918 and Dec 1918/Jan 1919 to see if either of the 2 men mentioned are listed.

Despite everyone's help, I'm still stuck with this man but here is his entry on the Hawick Roll of Honour which was unveiled on November, 11th, 1923,:
