My thanks to the club Secretary for allowing me access to this memorial. I will fill out more details when time allows.

Regards

I 'think' this is the R. Maule listed;

Name: MAULE, ROBERT
Initials: R
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Lieutenant
Regiment/Service: Royal Scots
Unit Text: 5th Bn
Secondary Unit Text: (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles)
Age: 31
Date of Death: 27/05/1915
Additional information: Son of Sir Robert Maule of Ashbrook, Edinburgh, Scotland.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: I. H. 3.
Cemetery: PINK FARM CEMETERY, HELLES

THE PEOPLE'S JOURNAL: 05.06.1915
PERTHSHIRE OFFICER FALLS AT THE DARDANELLES

The death is reported at the Dardanelles on May 27th, of Lieutenant Robert Maule, 5th Battalion Royal Scots, only son of Sir Robert Maule, Ashbrooke, Edinburgh and Dalreoch, Tummelbridge. Lieutenant Maule, who was 31 years of age, graduated at Cambridge University, where he was well-known in sporting circles, obtaining his Blue for la crosse. He afterwards joined his father in business in Edinburgh, and was made a partner of the firm about two years ago. He became associated with the Royal Scots four years ago, joining as second lieutenant, and was promoted to full lieutenancy last year. He went to the Dardanelles with his battalion three months ago.

* ALSO COMMEMORATED ON BLAIR ATHOLL WAR MEMORIAL

Robert Maule is also commemorated on the Granton War Memorial - his father's home at Ashbrook on Ferry Road was within the parish. A biographical note in the Scotsman of 2nd June 1915, Page 11, says that he was educated at Morrison's Academy Crieff, the Leys School Cambridge and at Christ's College Cambridge. He may, therefore, be on a few more war memorials.

Jessie, thanks for that. All pieces of information are great in helping build a bigger picture. I am hopeful of getting access to Morrisons Academy at some point. I believe that thie fallen each have a portrait picture within the memorial hall.

Thank you for the information - I am researching the names on the Granton War Memorial and have already gathered quite a bit of material about Robert Maule and the circumstances of his death but I did not know about the Perthshire connection. There is a photograph of him in the Edinburgh Evening News of 02/06/1915.

Another of the names on the Bruntsfield Links Golf Memorial - Harry Cheyne - is also on the memorial at St Serf's Church on Ferry Road in Edinburgh. I was there last Sunday for "Doors Open Day" and noted the names but have not gone any further with them yet.

Jessie

Did you get a photo of the St Serf's memorial by any chance?

Yes, an unfortunate name for a minister. He was minister of St George's Church in Charlotte Square and is on their memorial in St Andrew's and St George's on George St. He's also listed on Largs War Memorial.

Regiment/Service: Royal Scots
Unit Text: 15th Bn.
Date of Death: 28/04/1917
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Memorial: ARRAS MEMORIAL

I did get a photograph of the Memorials in St Serf's Church but I'm not happy with them. I can read the names on the WW1 memorial but the photograph is unsatisfactory due to the fact that the memorial is lit from above. I had some difficulty with the WW2 memorial as it is rather high up. However I will be visiting St Serfs again in 2 weeks time and hope to get better photographs. I was told that somebody else had been photographing the memorials on Sunday so maybe another member of this forum will be posting them.

Many thanks for all the replies and info.

Jessie, I've also been doing work on the Granton memorial as well as Blackhall, Cramond, Davidson's Mains and Newhaven, which are linked by various individuals. Perhaps we could touch base on our findings.
