There is a very "odd" tale regarding the two MILLERs.
As Gladys says they are on the Closeburn Parish War Memorial as:
JOHN MILLER, SEA. HIGH. and
JAMES MILLER, R.F.A. but neither appear on CWGC (in this format)
The Dumfries and Galloway Standard reported:
D&G Standard 23/6/1917 p.3
AULDGIRTH MAN WOUNDED Mr and Mrs Miller, Little Bridge, Auldgirth, have received information that their son, Gunner J. Miller, R.F.A., is in No. 4 Stationary Hospital, France, suffering from wounds and shell shock. This the second time that Gunner Miller has been wounded, and he has had a stirring career. At the outbreak war he was in the mercantile marine, holding the rank of Quartermaster on a liner. He served on a transport which convoyed troops to the Dardanelles for the famous landing in April, 1915; and later had the good fortune to escape with his life from ship which was torpedoed. He joined the Artillery last year.
D & G Standard 10/11/1917 p.3
Mr W. Miller, Blackwood, Auldgirth, has been notified that his son. Gunner James Miller, R.F.A., was posted as missing on 21st September last. He was wounded and suffered from shell shock in April, but was treated in hospital in France, and returned to his unit. His family have received no communication from him since June, except a field postcard. An officer has written stating that was sent out the guns and never returned, nor did he reach the guns. It was thought that he might have lost his memory, as he did once before after the shell shock. Gunner Miller was formerly a seaman, and took part with his ship in the first landing at the Dardanelles.
D&G Standard 29/6/1918 p.2
Mrs Miller, Blackwood Village Dunscore, has received letter from a chaplain, writing from the Wesleyan Institution, Port Said, informing her that her son Trooper John Miller, Australian Light Horse, been admitted to the 14th Ausralian General Hospital, suffering from a gunshot wound in the right shoulder received while taking part in a brave charge on a Turkish position, a specially difficult and valorous piece of work. Miller is 25 years age. He went to Australia six years ago and hae been serving in Egypt for about two and a half years.
D&G Standard 10/7/1918 p.3
AULDGIRTH SOLDIER DIES OF WOUNDS.
Mr and Mrs Miller, Blackwood Village, Auldgirth, have received intimation that their son, Trooper John Miller, of the Australian 8th Light Horse, died 5th June in an Australian hospital Port Said, from internal hemorrhage, following upon wounds received in action. The hospital chaplain, writing to inform the parents of his wounds, said received a gunshot in the right shoulder, “ while taking part in a brave charge a Turkish position. It was piece ot specially difficult and valorous work.” Subsequently writing regarding his death. the rev. gentleman says : “He was good Christian lad, and was much liked the by the staff and fellow-patients. One could see that was beloved in the regiment also.” He was buried with full military honours in the military cemetery about two miles from Port Said, along the seashore. Trooper Miller was one time gardener at Friars’ Carse, but for six years before the outbreak of the war had been in Australia. He came over with the Australian troops in 1915, and was through the Egyptian and Palestine campaigns, taking part, among other historical events, in the capture of Jerusalem. His brother James, who formerly served in the navy and took part in the first landing at the Dardanelles, was afterwards in R.F.A., and has been missing since 17th September of last year.
So it seems that JOHN served with the Australians rather than the Seaforths and he is in fact listed by CWGC but as JAMES!
James Miller, Trooper (1662) 8th Australian Light Horse.
Died of Wounds on 4 June 1918 and buried in Port Said War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Looking through the his service record there was a mix-up over his first name but it was officially resolved that he was JOHN MILLER. This does not seem to have got to CWGC but it is being looked into.
He named his father William Miller of Blackwood Village as his next-of-kin.
As for JAMES MILLER, RFA - I think he may have been Gunner 8626 & 656092. He enlisted on 13 January 1916 (which aligns with the first news paper report) and he was discharged from the 4th Reserve Battery (TF) RFA due to sickness on 13 July 1918. He was aged 28 which aligns with his known date of birth of August 1890 in Glencairn, Dumfriesshire. He was awarded a Silver War Badge (379113)
However, without a service or pension record, I cannot be sure - and I have been unable to trace a death record for him.
Their parents, William and Janet (Haddow) Miller, lived at Little Bridge, Blackwood Village which the 1905 to 1920 Valuation Rolls places in Closeburn Parish.
Any thoughts/ideas would be most welcome. _________________ Ken |
