Roll of Honour for Skye and Lochalsh by Graham Ross held at Portree Library and Inverness Library . (loose leaf )

KILMUIR WAR MEMORIAL :

On the 24th December 1923 a large crowd gathered in the KILMUIR Burial Ground for the Unveiling of the Kilmuir War Memorial . The Rev Stewart , the Parish Minister for Kilmuir , commenced the service and the Rev MacDonald , the United Free Minister led the congregation in prayer. The Inscription on the Memorial was unveiled by the local Schoolmaster, Mr John MacNab , whose two sons are commemorated on it. An oration was then given by Major Hilleary of Edinbain Lodge.

The Memorial is sculptured out of blocks of granite and was of such great weight that a special lorry had to be brought from Inverness to transport the Monument from Portree to Kilmuir. It was erected about 30 yards from the FLORA MACDONALD monument in KILMUIR CHURCHYARD and stands about 15 feet high.

( I recall that Graham Ross obtained his information for the Roll of Honour from the Oban Times , the newspaper that was read on the Isle of Skye during that century ).

The official location shows KILMUIR OLD CHURCHYARD , KILMUIR , Isle of Skye .

The quality of photos are not as good as I would have wished as I had to take cover between the heavy rain showers. Black Clouds gathered but thanks John (Burnett ) for adding my pics to this section .
